FLUIDZ!!!!!!!!!!! yes, Fluids. i have recently been contemplating on changing my fluids in my car since i aquired a 260pc tool set for Xmas. i forsee a coolant flush and a tranny, rear diff change in the next coming weeks. which transmission fluids are best for a 142xxx milage car? i would like to protect my car the best i can from any more grinds and quirks. i already have the slightest of grinds going into 3rd (i know, common) and i dont wnat to make it worse. and how much should i put in? i have done a fluid change on my nissan maxima and i was told put enough in until it starts to come out the fill hole. is this the same for subarus? ive owned two but never done a transmission fluid change. i will not do uncle scotty's. bad juju. i want to change the coolant, but is it really necessary? i have driven the car almost 20k miles and it has not had a coolant flush within the last year that i know of.(damn i cant believe i have done that already). when is the proper time to flush the coolant milage wise? the coolant flush i probably wont do it myself because it looks like an extensive project. with my garden hoses stored away for winter, i dont think a coolant flush will be happening in my garage. what are the prices for a coolant flush? i remember hearing they are around $100? but i may be mistaken. My car: 1998 Subaru Legacy 2.5GT 5 speed manual 142xxx miles driven by me for almost 20xxx miles irrelevant information: Green bronze wrx wheels with dunlop m3 sportz for weinter and a newly refabbed full borla exhaust. wingless. P.S. does anyone know if wrx door cards will fit on my car? i really hate my stock ones.
I've been running Uncle Scotty's for over a year and it's not the miracle cure-all everyone claims it is on high-mileage trannies. Mine ran smooth as glass for a day and went back to its old routine after that. With that said, however, I had over 130,000 on the ticker before putting it in. I just got Motul Gear300 for Christmas to try something different, but I haven't had time to put it in yet. I've heard good things about it, but it's expensive stuff.
that is a possibillity anything for my baby. where can i find Motul Gear300? oh btw you will have a PM shortly
DO NOT use a synthetic fluid in your trans, it will make the grind 100000000000X worse. use a mixture of 75w and GM syncromesh, it should take care of the grinds, and it WILL mix together just fine. Ive been running syncromesh for about 90K miles (waayyyyyyy too much) but my trans is fine! it took care of what grinds I had at the time, and that was a LONG ass time ago.
do your own door cards, take the old ones out, clean off adheasive on the plastic, go to the store, buy a yard of fabric and spary adhesive. (do not get 3m super 77, as that will not last.) cut new ones out, apply adhesive to plastic, apply adhesive to fabric, reassemble, profit?
yea that sounds like an ok idea, but i do like the way the wrx window switches arent on the side of the door
and awdimprezaL what exactly is GM syncromesh is it General Motors syncromesh? where can i buy it? and what mixture of 75w90 and GM syncromesh did you use? nvm.. search > me but what mixture combo did you use?
I would use 1 qt syncromesh (which you can get from any gm dealer) and 2.9 qts of regular 75-90, right now i'm running 100% "mesh" its probably not the best idea, but hey, I never play by the rules.
haha thank you for the informational input everyone! i think im going to go with the gm/-insert brand name gear oil here- 75w90 standerd gear oil combo although i have been seeing alot of happy faces on users with that motul stuff blackozone suggested... anyone know anything about coolant flushes?
On 05+ LGTs the fluid of choice lately has been Subaru's Extra-S fluid though i don't know if that would apply to your transmission.
Yes on an already good shifting tranny it will make it feel great, but on an already grinding worn out trans, its gonna make it worse.
/\ My car came with Mobil 1 in it. I can vouch that it won't help much if your synchros are already taking abuse (like mine).
Subaru Extra-S? There aren't many complaints around about that it seems, unlike pretty much everything else. Not sure with the 3rd gear grinding, though. It's also now available in quart bottles from various places. The Motul Gear 300 seems to also have a good rep. These are nothing more than interwebz regurgitations, though. I have no real experience of significance with tranny fluids, other than that my Amsoil 75w90 syn seems to work fine so far (not many miles).
Where does one find extra-s? Morries uses Valvoline. I found that dino oil works the best in my 6mt, with dying syncros. Amsoil syncromesh was good too.
I saw this place from a RS25 or NASIOC post: http://www.5-starperformance.com/servlet/the-1206/Subaru-75w90-"Extra-S"/Detail I also seemed to have it in my head that one of our locals like MAP or GrimmSpeed was dispensing it in smaller amounts these days, too - but I could be wrong, it's just a vague recollection.
I know. If I re-find my vague recollection of a local place offering it I'll post it, but I doubt I'll stumble across it. Seems odd that there wouldn't be more group buy type deals here or vendors buying bulk and reselling.
Dude, didn't it get a brand new radiator and flush after I traded it in at the end of Jan 08 when you picked it up? I believe the coolant was also flushed before that too when they did the head gaskets and all that stuff. Diff fluid was solid, but you may want to check now that its been another 20k.
holy **** on a stick youre right! im glad you remembered that because i forgot entirely yea. i am going to do the tranny and dif. fluids however.
yeah man, the radiator should be fine, unless you are just abusing the thing, which I am pretty sure you aren't. tranny and diff would be safe to do...never hurts. especially if you say there is a slight grind.
I used them. Any Subaru dealer should have it. It is the fill for warranty replacment Spec-B transmissions at minimum.
Yep, though local subaryu dealers might make some money if they resold the fluid in thier own quart bottles for less than 5-star, but over cost. (hint, hint)
Ya I wouldn't mind going in on a drum, but I'd like to know how much the drum is, and how much is in said drum. 30 gal? 50 gal? 3840 oz?
Not bad. If it's about 5 gallons and $150ish, that's about $7-8 / quart. About what I pay for decent gear oil anyways. I've wasted almost that much trying different gear oils...
