so i had a fog light go out on me and im wondering about what bulb to buy, is there a big diff to go with like silver stars at all? i mean $20 a bulb they better be awesome, anyone running these? or have input?
Ii have them they r very bright during the summer but with the snow yellow seem to work bettter. As far as life span goes I've had mine about a year. If u don't do the foglight mod so they run all the time then they last a long time.
I ran Silverstar's in everything I could, but when one burns out and you have to spend $20-$25 everytime, it gets old real fast. I didn't think they were brighter at all (in fact they shouldn't be - same wattage with ANY bulb coating = diminished output), but the coloring was a nice white that really seemed to give more contrast. Now I run just regular Silvania/Osram bulbs - decent quality (cheap bulbs don't last long), and we stock them at my work. I still run a H4 Silverstar in my bike though.
The Narva golds emit a yellow light. I think they were recommended by Daniel Stearn Lighting, but I don't remember. They were very popular for a while, and may still be, not sure, as I haven't really worried about lighting in a while. I'll also reiterate what has been said over and over here, the Silvania Silverstars make a marginal difference in light output, and they last about 1/3rd as long as a standard bulb. I had them a long time ago, and I had to replace the driver's side lamp 3 times. At which point I said screw it and bought regular old 4 dollar headlamp bulbs. And I've heard it plenty of times, but it wasn't excessive finger touching of the bulb before it was installed. The last two I installed with rubber nitrile gloves because I thought that might have been in. They just burn out fast. And they aren't all that great for the money.
Silverstars might have a slight benefit in the headlights. None at all in the fogs, and as the 'mix says, they burn out very fast. Essentially it's not going to make much of a difference what you put in there, so go with what makes you happy. Me? I like yellow/amber fogs, but I'm not fooling myself, it doesn't make them better, it just makes them yellow. Best performance for the money is just plain old normal halogen bulbs.
