The first generation Legacy is known for the fuel filler neck rusting out. The plastic shield holds crud against the tube, and well, it just rusts out. I got sick of fuel leaking when I filled it up the beater wagon, so I swapped in the neck from the old hotrod. Needless to say, the old filler neck was in rough shape, lol. It wasn't that bad until I beat on it a little bit to get it out.
Well, I avoided working on the beater as much as possible. Sometimes even too much, as in this case. I seem to go in spurts though. In the last day, I took care of that filler neck, patched holes in the rear gate because exhaust was coming in, fixed the exhaust again, put in a new oil pressure switch, and if I'm feeling froggy after the meet, I might swap out the main ignition relay and the water temp sensor. I finished school Tuesday night, so I have some time on my hands until I find a real job. I can only spend 3-4 hours at a time job hunting otherwise I go crazy. It actually wasn't that bad on the inside. It is galvanized or something.
i am sure the neck on my 94 turbo looks just like that. cant fill it up past half without it leaking. part of the reason she is parked right now. how tough of a job is it to replace?
JB 80 is your friend. It honestly isn't that bad. I had to massage the important bolts back and forth so I didn't snap them, but I didn't care about the bolts that held the plastic cover on. Also, don't plan on geting the screws out that hold the neck to the body. Have a sharp drill bit and new hardware. A new clamp for the rubber hose from the filler neck is also necessary. All in all it wasn't that bad. It's just the rust and dirt flying everywhere when you take it apart that may be soaked with gasoline.
Congratulations!!! I hate job hunting and that is why I have stuck with the same place for 12 years. Not sure why they have stuck with me though. Good luck with the hunt.
