i thought there was a thread on here about gas mileage but can't seem to find it.

i got a 2012 wrx and for the last two years i don't think i ever broke 23mpg, top was probably 22.8 or something like that, in general it's somewhere around 20.4-21.4. doesn't really matter if it's city driving or driving accross the country. hwy speeds are usually 70-80 and are a majority of my driving, by far.

reason i'm asking is that i just came back from a business trip and head one of them legacy outback wagons for a rental, same driving principle and drove it 350 miles roundtrip on the highway at 70-80 mile average and the car would get 28-29mpg for the 2 weeks that i had it.

guess i'm a little anoyed that a much bigger car, still 4wd could get such better gas mileage.

    what's your experience?

With the turbo its all about your right foot. I used to get 27ish hwy mileage on my 07 wrx when it was stock and stage 2.
21ish mpg around town depending on how I drove.
If you are using cruise control for a long trip and not in boost at all and you are still only getting 23mpg that is kinda bad. Are you stock? What octane fuel?

It depends on how I drive that will depend how generous my mileage can be.

in the city if i romp on it I am getting 18's but if i baby it and drive like a grandma i typically am in the 22'-23's .

i find myself anywhere from 20-27 on the highway depending on how much of a lead foot i have at the moment. I did take a trip to northern minnesota for a family event back around christmas. On the way back i cruise controlled at 60 most of the way and was hitting 32.

I guess it might vary based on if you've tuned / done any mods to the vehicle you have.

I was struggling to hit 19 mpg on 91-93 this winter, once spring rolled around I was between 23-24.

Keep in mind also that the gas mileage readouts on the new Subaru's typically reads high...like 1-2 mpg high. I sometimes cross reference with the actual calculation based on miles driven and gallons replaced.

In my 3.6R legacy, I actually get 28-30 MPG when cruising on the highway around 75 mph...very surprised. Around town, I usually get low 20's. While driving through the country side on 2 lane roads, were I was occasionally speeding up to pass other cars, I got about 26-28 mpg. This is about the same mileage that I got in my 2.5L naturally aspirated Saabaru.

My STI MPG...Seems like GPM (gallons per mile). LOL not really, but autox/full track really kills the gas mileage.

I normally don't compute mileage for my STI because I don't want to know.

My civic on the other hand pulls 43mpg at 70mph and at 55mph i'll average low 50s high 40s

The best my 04 wagon was getting last summer was 29.5 on road trips up north. This spring the best i've gotten was 27.5. Im guessing that's from me using T6.

Completely stock, running 91-93 octane, never use cruise.

problem is that 70mph+ you're above 3K RPM, it seems like anytime i'm above 3K then the fuel goes really fast, which is 99% of the driving for me.

Thats because at 3k and 5th gear any little movement of the throttle will spool the turbo. Get a bigger turbo or use CC.

Buy a bigger turbo so you can save money on fuel...? Makes sense to me...

Bigger turbo will get better mileage because its easier to stay out of boost. I was being facetious but it does work.

I know what you were doing and I thought it was funny. It just amazes me when I hear "get something NA to save yourself some money on fuel" or something along those lines.

Yep. At the end of the day, fuel mileage is all about engine load.

My 02 bugeye, 18g and the mods, 4eat, 30-33 on the freeway and 23-25 in town.
my 09 fxt, stg2, 29-30 on the freeway and 23-25 in town.

In my fxt, I bet with something other than that damn td04 I would easily be in the mid to upper 30's. I need a larger hotside to keep up with the 2.5l.

Been watching mine the last few weeks and have been wanting to post about it:
2014 WRX, about 50/50 city & highway driving each week, and last few tanks have been 26.5 mpg, and that's about 330 miles per tank with about 2-3 gallons in tank...I think. Not sure how big that tank is either. At any rate, that's better than my 2003 Maxima that I've been driving for 10 years, and the WRX is about 100 times more fun to drive.

    Other interesting stats:
    2014 WRX: 65mph @2600 rpm, 75mph @ 3000 rpm
    2003 Maxima: 65 mph @ 2300 rpm, 75mph @ 2600 rpm

Not sure when the WRX starts to spool, but it feels like about 2800-3200 rpm, and I usually shift between 3500 -4500 rpm depending on where I am.

Seems like the WRX is the best of both worlds - plenty fast and fun and doesn't guzzle gas (as I've read many, many places) :)
