I am looking at upgrading the gears in my transmission. What would you guys recommend and where would you recommend getting them? I do not want straight cuts if that helps narrow it down. The gears will go into an 02 wrx 5mt. Let me know what you think and thanks for the help.

Can diversified down in prior lake do that??? Do you know how much it cost??

Not totally understanding how sycros work and stuff in the transmission, would that be something I would want to have treated as well??

The rally spec tranny is basically a cryo'd stocker. As far as I know, they can do the whole thing, it just needs to be apart and clean. The go by weight when it gets to stuff like that, so you would have to figure out what all the misc parts weigh and go from there. Give Mark a call.

I wonder how much power the stock cryo stuff would hold up to. 4000 bucks for gears does not appeal to me.

Cryo-treating will allow you to load them up more but it won't do much to protect against shock to the drivetrain. So if you shift like an idiot you'll still break your gears, and more power to them will only increase your chances of that. If you shift smooth and/or can double-clutch your downshifts then cryo-treating will help you out a lot for the cost. Otherwise it's time to go dogs

What about cryo-treating high mileage gearsets if they are in good shape?

IT may seem hard to comprehend but 99% of the time it will be the last gear set you'll ever need...everyone that has it, loves it...I still can't wait to put mine on...lol I've had mine for 1.5 yrs. in storage...

Spending the money to have someone tear down your tranny, send the parts to get cryoed, and then reassmbled really isn't worth it, imho. Save that money to put towards a PPG set or a 6mt.

Yeah thats true but sticking 4G's into a daily driver transmission is not worth it. Hell thats about a third of what I paid for the car. Your car it would be worth it cause its a project/show car.

But tearing down the transmission your self and having the gears cryoed might be worth it.

Deep cryogenic tempering is a one-time, homogenous process that permanently and dramatically improves the performance and useful life of metals in everything from brake rotors and performance engines to machine tools and gun barrels. Using a proprietary computer-controlled process, the metal is cooled slowly to deep cryogenic temperatures (-300°), and slowly returned to room temperature, then heat-tempered as the final step. Computer technology allows us to regulate temperatures to 1 degree, accurately controlling Cryo tempering in accordance with the material and mass of your parts. Although not apparent to the naked eye, the improvements to the metal are significant. Deep cryogenic tempering creates dramatic increases in abrasive wear resistance and durability. The increases in tensile strength, toughness and stability couple with the release of internal residual stresses.

Deep cryogenic processing creates a large amount of fine or small carbides that precipitate uniformly throughout the lattice structure. This greatly improves the wear properties of metal. The process also completes the martensitic phase change which creates a metallurgically improved and stabilized alloy.

dave buscher is selling his tranny with PPG gears already installed with a clutch for $3800 shipped. If I had the money I would pick it up since the gears alone are about the same price.

They are a good gearset. Have them cryo'ed, shot peened if you could and you'll be happy. BUT you run mor than 400whp and you need to look at other options like STi 6spd or PPG's.

Nope just looking for a good gear setup. So the RA gears no like 400hp? well I might have to looking the PPGs then, to accommodate some of the future mods I have on my list.

RA gears aren't any wider than '04+ WRX gears. Don't bother with them, imho.

    interesting stuff Russ....

Any ideas how much this helps for yield strength of the material? From the sounds of it, this process better applies to wear parts and not highly stressed parts. Send a little more of your nerd-wisdom my way. Thanks.
