So basically I noticed this weekend that my car makes a grinding type of noise when I am accelerating and when it is in neutral and the clutch is out, but if it is in gear and gliding the noise goes away and if I push the clutch in while idling it also stops, and it doesnt happen in reverse, anyone have any guesses as to what it might be? I feel like it has something to do with the clutch, but other than that I dont have a clue as to where to even begin. :???: btw my car is a 94 inpreza wagon, 1.8L AWD, 5 speed Any help is much appreciated -Kevin
Just a guess, best I can do from a distance: You have a worn berring on the input shaft of your transmission. Theory - while coasting in gear there is some load on the shaft, taking up some slack in the system and keeping it from making as much noise. With the clutch disengaged the input shaft is not turning. We had the same problem with a Impreza FWD transmission. Good luck, - Paul

Thats what I have been told it probably is, is there any specific reason for the snout kit as opposed to any others?
I forgot to ask, is it possible that some dirt or sand or something could have gotten into somewhere and that is what is causing this?
I guess I haven't looked for other options, but reasoning behind the kit: snout will wear and the bearing will be kind of crooked especially noticed soon after bearing replacement. This kit helps the bearing sit straight, prior to this repair was buying a new trans case, not cheap. Also bearing is a sealed unit and unless severely damaged shouldn't be expose rotating surfaces to foreign objects.
well after driving from fargo back home to maple grove in the rain it no longer makes any noise, so that makes me believe that something was very dirty and it got cleaned out on the journey
It's possible clutch dust got washed out, but just wait till it dries and warms up, it'll probably come back.
cause if it happened once it will happen again, UNLESS you have no clutch left to make dust also I still vote throw out bearing... just cause the noise went away doesnt mean the bearing aint about to let go...
