When I buy i tend to go for the more common (and military used calibers). For example 5.56/.223, .308, 12ga, 9mm, .45cal. Lot easier and cheaper to find ammo then the oddball stuff, especially if a "**** hits the fan" scenario, you'll be more likely to find it.
300 blackout (and 300 whisper, which they can shoot) has gotten rather popular, so its getting easier and easier to get... when it's in stock, the problem is they've gotten too popular so now the ammo flys off the shelf, in large amounts, rapidly. Remmington and PNW can be had for $9-13 a box all day long, and if you reload it yourself you can do it for 25-50 cents a round, maybe less, depending on what you're using. Since it uses 5.56/.223 brass that's modified, you can build up a ton of brass quick and cheap if you want to reload too. I've got my dies and a ton of brass ready to go, just need to get my press and stuff. Same goes with 6.8SPC II, it's gotten a lot more popular so prices have come down and its a lot easier to obtain now. There are still some "exotic loads" (insert pun here), such as the 458 socom and 50 beowulf, but even those, 6.5 grendel, ect... can all be had relatively easily, really. With ARs, buy one that suits your needs, its that easy, or build one for a task. Keep in mind that certain variants (like 5.45, 7.62x39, 6.8) will require different mags, bolts, and barrels. Beyond that, they're like Subarus, they're legos and you can do whatever you want with them really. If I were going to buy/build another for myself, I'd take the time and get an SBR tax stamp, because it'd be too fun not to, and it's the polar opposite of my 20" Stainless Steel Krieger Match-Bull Barrel'd upper. Long story short, AR's can be cheap, or really expensive...it's similar to a Remmington 700, just gotta tailor one to your needs.
Sorry about that Shorty. My comment was meant to be the funny, I truly do not want your lady to do you any harm.
No worries, I just wasn't quite sure If I were going to do it, it'd be something of a larger caliber to ensure that I wouldn't have to worry about lingering. .308, .45-70 or .50cal. Back to ze guns! What are people using for holsters? I prefer just tucking the gun in the front of my pants, nothing like living on the edge.
^^^For concealment? CrossBreed SuperTuck with the xdsc, when I'm lazy(I admit that it happens)a simple desantis(?) pocket holster for the lcp. No joke at Bill's yesterday, dude walks in and plops his j-frame(or similar) on the counter and says he's looking for a holster, worker tells him to put it in a case/holster....dude doesn't have one and shoves it right into the back of his pants.
Well as if you don't already know, I just called the gun shop I usually make purchases thru and he told he every affordable gun is flying out the door. This will more then likely be driving ammo up the roof. He suggested I wait till after Jan to make my next purchase. WOW.
Yikes! I'm sure the employees at Bill's have to deal with that kind of crap more than they care to. I should mention that I'm completely kidding about not using a holster, especially when my carry pistol uses a trigger safety. My current (and last) holster is a PhantomLC from Raven Concealment. I had to have one custom made because nobody makes a holster for carry use that is compatible with a Surefire X400. Best holster I've ever used, and I've got a couple more on order from them. I can't recommend them highly enough if you're looking for a kydex holster. I've heard great things about the CrossBreed SuperTucks, however.
I have a Crossbreed and I find it uncomfortable and difficult to sit with. It's always riding up against my thigh and gets pushed up when I'm not standing. I think there's a bit to much leather for people my size.
Galco super tuck. most days, when im not working....or drinking lol. I found that the belt makes a huge difference in the holster riding up or not.
http://www.luckygunner.com/labs/bra...50f8-1/20/13-+NewsletterList&utm_medium=email Decent comparison of brass vs. steel cased ammo for those who are interested.
so is WOlf brand bad?? I buy it form Fleet farm as it is cheap and I have had very little issues on my handgun... meh.. Im gonna keep using it haha
I didn't have good luck with Wolf feeding through my 9mm XDM. It would catch in the magazine. It worked fine if I interspersed with brass cased ammo. It also seemed very dirty with a lot of spark coming out of the barrel. As of yesterday Fleet Farm in Brooklyn Park had a lot of 9mm Remmington in stock.
In for the late subscription. I've been mulling over a handgun to get for almost a year and haven't committed.
Do it!!!! I'll stick with the brass for now too, if it gets to that point where it's really hard to find new factory brass stuff then I'll switch to anything I can get my hands on. Speaking of ammo I found some more 308 ammo at walmart today, finally built up enough to comfortably start using some of it.
I've been thinking about making my first handgun purchase, any suggestions? Leaning towards a 9mm or .40.
Yeah I have been told is always better on the wear and tear.... but being as a little as I use it right now steel works for me... I did have it jam a couple of times since owning it... like what was mentioned above more in the mag.... but at a difference of $5 a box of 50 Ill stick with the steel for now and buying 2 boxes of brass I can get 3 of steel hahaah yep I am cheap
Pretty much going to the range from time to time. I always end up using my friends when we shoot, so I figure I can quit being a bum.
I've been thinking about getting my C&C but don't really plan on carrying the gun on me much. Yea, self defense as well.
I would go and see what fits your hand best and what you can naturally point and shoot. 9mm is a good option, it's cheap to shoot and there are plenty of good defense ammo options. Higher capacity too. My personal recommendations are either Glock, H&K or the S&W M&P series. It's all in what fits you best.
Thanks for the input! I was at Gander mountain browsing today , so I figured I'd ask for some suggestions.
^^^^Don't forget the springfield XD/XDm line of guns too. I haven't looked yet but Bill's normally has a spring shooters show that is a great time to try multiple firearms at only the cost of the ammo. Any of you gun owners sitting on a pile of extra glock 19 magazines? Want to sell 1 or 2 to help a brother out? Trying to avoid the really high priced auction stuff. I do have one or two 30 round p-mags BNIB that I'd be able to part with in a trade of sorts.
Definitely try out the Springfield XDm's. I tried the 5.25" 9mm at Bill's, rental is like $15. Gives you a chance to shoot it before buying. I went with the 4.5", i like it alot and got a good deal on it, but kind of wish that i would have gotten the 5.25". Pic...Springfield XDm 9mm(4.5")
I've got the 5.25" in 40 cal, we can trade for a few rounds if you'd like. I'm avoiding Bill's Gun Show because it's insanely crowded, plus I have a better option now.
Applied for the permit to purchase today. Getting a Springfield XDM .40 4.5" bi-tone as soon as I can. The Springfield fits my hand a lot better than any of the Glock weapons did. Wife and I are taking the C&C class in late Feb, early March.
they're normally pretty quick about getting you the purchase permit, it's only taken two weeks from submission to permit in my wallet the past few years. my dad and I have been talking about finally going through the conceal class, but haven't yet for whatever reason, probably do that within the next month or two.
There's currently two deals on Groupon. These programs have the media and congress to thank for their booming business, they are essentially booked out for several months.
I filed for my P to P in New Brighton and it came in just 4 days! I was syked because i already had money down on the pistola!
We've got a few different options lined up currently, just trying to plan with a close buddy and his dad as well. I'll be honest, I couldn't care less about carrying, and likely never will, as I've never once felt like my life was endangered enough to want to carry. However, not having to remember to go back to the Police once a year to renew my purchase permit, AND being able to carry outside of events (enroute to events), as opposed to just events would be nice and would simplify travel and transport situations.
Supposedly Wolf ammo can wear out the ejector/extractor in ARs. That's all we've shot in our 6700 for years and never had a single problem. I've been wanting a M&P 9 for a long time, finally told my parents to order one in, all our wholesalers are backordered along with most common handguns... So hopefully they'll get more in sooner or later. Also have been having a hell of a time finding .308 ammo, I was using 150gr Remington Core-Lokts since it was decent and cheap ($20/box of 20). Nobody has any in lately, only thing "cheapish" was Federals or a shop had in Magtech 150gr FMJ which was cheaper but read some reviews and people either said it was great, or that the casings got jammed up in their bolt actions and had to pretty much hammer the bolt open. I figured i'd play it safe with the Federal. Has anyone on here had any experience with the Magtech stuff?
I did a lot of calling around today and couldn't find anyone who had the gun that I wanted (with the 4.5" barrel) so I went to Gander tonight on a whim. They have a lay-away program where you can pay to reserve a gun until you get the permit. Turns out, the last XDm they had in the .40 was the floor model. Unfortunately it is the 3.8" but I put a down payment on it anyway. With things as crazy as they are, I decided to buy it. Can you guys offer any recommendations on a bedroom gun safe? I'd rather have one in a top drawer of a dresser than in the wall. I was considering one with either the finger-button-pattern or one with a fingerprint scanner, but would LOVE to hear opinions.
