Ok so a few months ago i was driving down hwy 10 and i ran over a shovel! YES A SHOVEL i know! It wasnt a small yard shovel either, it was a big scoop snow shovel. After i ran that over and almost had a heart attack because of the extremely loud THUD!!!! I noticed that my car rattled a little when at idle sometimes but usually if i just rev the engine in neutral to about 2500-3000 rpms. So here is a pic of where i have narrowed the rattleing down to. (sorry if its a little blurry) anywho i tried to spray some bolt loosener on these bolts and nothing!! They are pretty rusted. So does anybody have any idea how to get this off or just get it so the dent doesn't make that rattling noise. Im going to try and sell the car in a week or two and don't want people to get scared off or think that its a pile of junk cuz it rattles. Any advice or help would be moocho appreciated! Thanks guys! (96 Legacy L)
If you really want to take it off, use a cutting wheel. Seriously, its the only way to get old heat shields off. You could hammer on it and bend it until it doesn't rattle anymore. I've used stainless zip ties to tighten them up too. What has the bling blang next to it?
OK so that being said i guess i would rather cut off the shield than beat the crap out of it. My car didn't do anything to me but good so i don't wanna beat it up! Anywho i have some tools in my arsenal but a cutoff wheel isn't one does anybody have one that i could borrow, Possibly!!? Im north of the cities in Ramsey, so prepherably close so i don't have to drive far to get. Thanks! The bling in the background is the rim on my tahoe, described in my sig.
i dont have a sawzall either. i was gonna get one but never got around to it. so i could just pry it away from what it is rattling on?? BTW what is that covoring?? it looks like there is a sensor or something comming out of the top of it.
Its covering a cat. Generally the straps rust a bit and get loose or whatever. You can get it to not rattle for a while by bending or hammering on it so its not loose enough to rattle.
I had an old heat shield cut off at Bradan Automotive once because it was rattling on my Legacy I used to have. They couldn't get the bolts off so they just cut it.
I would have avoided the shovel. I mean .. it's a shovel. You can see it on the road. Was there just no opportunity to swerve around it? I've run over boxes, random crap, trash, plastic bags, but anything that looks metal, i try to get out of the way.
I do on the STi. This rattling business is on my 96 Wagecy! I wish i woulda had time. I was about 3 or 4 lengths behind a big truck. He went right over it and there was someone on the right of me. So if i would have swerved it would have been into them or i would have drove right over the big part with the wheels of the car so i decided to just kuckle up and take it!! It SUCKED!!!!
I think i might do this!! I do have a dremel. Any suggestions on bits? Should i CUT off the bolts or just grind them down ??
Dremel makes a reinforced disk, I would use that, should be available at home depot, just cut the bolts right off! http://www.dremel.com/en-us/AttachmentsAndAccessories/Pages/AttachmentsDetail.aspx?pid=456
