When i am at a stop light for instance, when my clutch is pushed in and i am in gear before i take off, my engine will rev up to 2k by itself, stay there for a second and then go back to idle. my car never has never done this until recently and now it happens fairly consistently. is there something wrong? '05 2.5rs, no mods. any input welcome. this happens at most stopsigns, not just when i start my car.

Bent Engine mount is the other thing it might be but it seems like too small of a rev to be that.

Do you have your A/C going? That will vary your RPMs.
Does this happen all the time, or when the engine is warm / cold?

explain how a bent engine mount would do this.... since its getting colder outside i would contribute it to the weather, do you have your ac or defrost on? ive driven many wrxs that do this

The engine will maintain 1000-2000 RPM if it's still cold. Once it's warmed up, it shouldn't do that anymore. Are you saying that this happens even when the motor is warmed up... even after driving for 10+ minutes? If so, check around to see if anything is loose or needs replacement.

Or it could be that your idle air control valve is stuck from being dirty. A stuck IAC valve will cause high rpm idling at all engine temps and it makes the car hesitate and lack power. It is found right after the throttlebody, and you just need some throttlebody cleaner spray to clean it up. (and maybe a new gasket for the IAC valve)

My car does this from time to time, warm or cold. I dont think its anything to worry about unless its doing it all the time...

My 6 cylinder makes 1250 lb/ft of torque.
It's basically a hydraulic valve with a small ball inside. When the car is on an incline with the brakes on, that ball rolls back and locks the brakes, and the clutch releasing is what unlocks them. That's the simplified version I remember from the Ride and Drive for the Forester.

This happens after the car is warmed up. during regular driving when at a stopsign, with the clutch pressed in before i take off. it has just started to do this regularly as of lately. the engine will rise to 2k, stay there for a second or so, then settle to idle again.

Could be a throttle position sensor sending bad signals to the ECU.

    Motor mounts? buahahaha
