Gentlemen, I have an issue which happened today... I was aggressively driving down 494 with another MNSubaru member (in a silver STI) today. As I slowed down nearing my house, I noticed my car spooling up slowly and a clicking or knocking sound coming from my engine bay as the engine was revved or accelerated... My car ('04 WRX) then stalled twice, while slowing to a stop at one light, and while slowing down to turn into the driveway... When in the driveway I let the car idle for a bit then revved the engine and got the same clicking or knocking sound... When turning off and restarting the car it really seems to struggle to fire almost like the battery or alternator is struggling... I am not a specialist and this is the first I have heard or seen of this with my vehicle! The car is near stock with just an Invidia UP/DP and STI cat-back... No other mods or engine changes... Help! Any ideas, or am I relagated to bringing it in to the dealership which could cost me a grip!?!?
Uh, Oh! Well, went out to start the car again and put in the garage... Started up a bit slow again; 'turn, turn, turn, VrooMmm, plop, plop, plop...' Then a little clicking or knocking again... Then it died for good, no more starting again... (Must be alternator, then battery... "click, click, click" ) Help! Any thoughts...
make sure all your connections are tight, especially at the battery, then alt and starter. if you can get it to start again, hold a screwdiver in your fist, and put your fist up to your ear, than touch the screwdriver to different parts of your engine, you'll be able to tell exactly where the noise is coming from in that way.
Hmmm... Well, is there anyone on this site that may take a look at it for a few bucks (or beers!) any time this weekend or possibly Monday at the latest... I need my ride for work! If any of you know who to contact, PM me or let me know who I can PM for any thoughts! Worse case scenario I'll have to find a way to get it to a dealership, preferrably Minnetonka for a look-see... Thanks for your help guys! -Depressed Suby owner in EP
It does not sound good I can certainly look at it. I wouldn't be able to get out there till later in the afternoon. I don't know if you want to drive it. PM me your number.
Thanks Matt and Dave for the response! I will be intouch with you guys for advice!!! Definite benefits to being a mnsubaru member are having contacts such as you fellas for help!
yeah the guy you raced is drunk with me right now. contact driftn240 and he'll get you up and running again for a very decent price. you can't beat brian's work. my car is mint and brian built it all.
Sorry about that, that was me, Im running stage 2 on a STi, i got to about a buck forty by the time it hit hwy 5. Hope things get better,
Yeah I was hangin with ya pretty decent running my WRX, once I was able to catch back up with ya!!! Always good times... No need to apologize, it was nothing the car shouldn't or couldn't do... I think I still had a bit left! It boils down to maybe too much pressure on the alternator with the stereo and what not I have been runnin (at least I hope that's what it is) I will say it was the fastest I had gone in the REX!
^^OMG...I hope not! Did you ever figure it out? It was hard to figure it out from your description over the phone. So many things could be amiss. Let me know if you need anything else. Dave
Scuba, BikerBoy was able to check it out and he did figure it out... (if I knew how to make a sad face on here I would) :-( Not good indeed, I'm sure I melted something... EEK! Man it only took me 7 months to srew something up major! Dammit, now I am without my subie for a couple weeks, but BikerBoy will hopefully have no problems rebuilding it. I guess the silver lining is that I am going to learn a lot about my car now that I didn't know before... An unfortunate and expensive lesson learned! :-/ Thanks for the help and advice
Car Back And Running... Well, thanks again to all of those who gave help and advice trying to help me out with my issue... I can honestly say I have learned more about any car including my Subie from the posts and feedback from this site and it is well appreciated. I plan on someday being a "Subie Dude" or maybe even a "specialist" (well maybe I shouldn't stretch things) thanks to advice and help. Most importantly my car is up and running again with expensive lessons learned thanks to Matt S. (Bikerboy)! I think just a bit of his Subie knowledge rubbing off on me is a good thing... Anyway I'm back baby! Now I just gotta break it in and get excited for my Stage 2 and suspension upgrades coming soon!!! (Oh yeah, that and winter!) -Marc
LMAO!!! Well... I HAVE used Holiday gas, but mainly I use SA or BP! But that wasn't the issue... Just a little costly neglegence on my part... I now know to make sure with a WRX to keep up on regular 3000 mile oil changes and *MAKE SURE* I check my oil all the time... I didn't realize how important it is since all of my other vehicles could regularly go 5000 miles between oil changes... (1st Subaru) Expensive mistake!
Good to hear you are back in business. It was nice to talk with you the other day. I hope the turbo treats you well.
Thanks Fino! I'm sure I'll get my share of use out of it... Only 350 more miles or so to break in the new set-up! Plus I got my accessport coming in the mail! Can't wait... *wags tail*
