ok all heres the deal. my dads car (94 impreza wagon 2.2l) started to make a ticking sound. the sound started just today there were no precursor, softer sound it just went at it.

the ticks vary depending on RPMs the higher the RPMs the faster the ticks. i thought the sound was coming from the back driverside of the engine, my dad thinks its coming from the middle of the block. the ticking is very loud and can be heard inside the car. my dad just seafoamed the crank case, changed the oil and added STP oil treatment. this did nto fix or help the problem.

does anyone have any idea what the problem may be? are we loking at rod knock here? ohh yeah FYI the car just rolled over 200k miles.

if its a tick then its NOT rock knock, its most likely some sort of valvetrain noise, find out which cylinder bank its ticking on and pop the valve cover off it

i just checked w/ a stethoscope. the ticking is coming from the drivers side, and it sounds louder towards the beack of the engine (cyl 4 right?).

Valve lash could be out of adjustment. Those things are supposed to be adjusted, ya know.

And wow, lifter noise is a given with our engines. My 96 L had it bad in the winter but there was never anything really wrong with it after I spent plenty having it checked out.

Try making sure the A/C or defroster is off. my mom's car gave us a scare, then we turned off the defroster and realized, it was the compressor.

    check the oil

    change the oil/filter

It could be a collapsed lifter, I belive that year they are hydraulic.

Those years they had hydrolic lifters. You can try putting some ATF in the oil. Or if that doesn't work I have a few lifters sitting around.

    thats good to know.

EDIT: Dad pulled off the valve cover. nothign feel out or looked out of place. however the ticking is coming from that side of the engine. he heard somewhere that the #4 piston (back driver side) is known to go bad. be thinks that might be it.

how much ATF should we add?

or try some Marvel Mystery Oil (MMO) in there, it helps alot on EA82 ticking.

btw, it's been named the TOD, or tick of death, on EA82s, and they run for thousands of miles with it. if it really is just a tick, and not a knock, I wouldn't worry

Hey, what do those use for adjsutment? Are they shim under bucket or what? Because if one is out of adjustment you will hear the ticking, and with feeler gauge it is easy to measure.

But if the car is paid for and you don't care, drive it until it dies. Why pay for a rebuild when the junk yard would be it's next home?

I would try running about 1qt. of ATF in the engine for a day or so.
