Hello Subie people! Some of you know me some of you don't. I'm tangledupinblu's bro Japheth. So here is the situation... I have an "older" 17" MacBook Pro with a bad graphics card/logicboard(?). It is a 2007 model with Intel Duocore 2 2.33 processors. I took it to the Apple store and they were like... "sorry, we can't help ya"... "but, good luck". I then took it to a local Apple repair shop and their estimate was $750. Thats a bit outta my budget at the moment... I did some research and found the logicboard for like $300, but I haven't ordered it yet... So here I am. I'm wondering if any techs on the forum would like to help a brother out. If i were to order the part is there someone that could install it for me? What can I offer... Hmm, well, besides my eternal gratitude, I am also a photographer/artist. Here is my website: www.jastorlie.com. I do all of my own printing (which is part of the reason why my computer is so important) on a 24" wide Epson. I could trade for my art, or family portraits or printing or some cash for labor, etc. Something, I certainly wouldn't expect anyone to do it for free, I just can't afford to spend more on labor than the cost of the part itself. Please just pm me if you have any thoughts or would like to help me out. Thanks in advance!
I am an electronics field engineer. I also only use hand built PCs. I don't see this being a problem in terms of technical skill. My only problem is that my work schedule is completely up in the air. Also, I remember hearing that mac books use special screws, I would have to look into that as I likely don't carry whatever screwdriver they are using to keep unwanted fingers out of them. It sounds like your schedule is a bit more dire, and my odd work schedule might not work out for a timely fix.
Thanks for your quick response! What wld u be looking at for a timeframe? I need the comp ASAP, but I also realize that beggers can't be chosers...
That's the problem. I can't commit to a time frame. At all. For instance, last week, on Monday I was busy in my office at home, but Tuesday and Wednesday I was out of town and didn't get back till late at night, Thursday I had clean up to do in my home office that took all day. Friday remained rather quiet. But that isn't a typical week. I fix ultrasound equipment in eastern Wisconsin. And sometimes I cover Minnesota and the Dakotas when people are out on vacation. It looks like a pretty easy repair though, I already have the tools in my tool kit, but I would need to pick up some thermal paste as I am out of that. I am willing to bet, if you brought it over on a Sunday, I could probably have it done and out the door in an afternoon. But if you leave it with me for a week, there's no telling when it'll get done.
I'm currently at work and left the comp at home. I'll get u the serial # as soon as I get home from work. If Sunday wld work and we can get the part before then that wld be fantastic.
Cool. As an FYI, I work Tues-Sat 11am-6pm. After we get the part, ANYTIME outside of my work hrs works for me.
Looks like you have the repair squared away already... iFixit should have a teardown guide for your model if you are interested in the process. http://www.ifixit.com/Device/MacBook_Pro
Actually, Readymix is very kind and willing to help me out but his schedule is a little full. So, to get it fixed sooner rather than later, I'm still looking for help. And iFixit... Thanks for the link, there are quite a few things I am willing to take on myself but this is not one of them. I really would rather find someone who is experienced in this and is willing to help/barter, etc. Thanks again!
Update... sorry, I have been away for a bit... Sooo... good news and bad news. Bad news 1st: I still haven't found a reasonably priced new or guaranteed logic board yet. Good news: my boss (having realized how detrimental it is to his business for me to have a functioning computer) went in on a new Macbook Pro with me. HEYO! So now I'm rockin' a 2012 15" with an i7 quad core 2.6 ghz processor, 8 gigs of memory, and a 750 gig hard drive! As a temporary solution, I pulled the hard drive out of the old 17" and put it in an enclosure. I'll still be repairing the computer when i find a logic board for it (and yes, I am still looking)... It has an awesome screen, decent memory, etc. I just have a little more time to find a logic board for a reasonable price. Besides, then I'll have two laptops. Or maybe I'll sell the 17" after I fix it? I'll let you (all) know as soon as I actually find a logic board... Thanks again to all of the replies!
