lol, if you are the designated driver or just don't want to drink, step outside before the REAL drinking starts otherwise they will block the way out and you're totally stuck IF you are on the groom's side...

lol, for my brother's wedding i drove out in the middle of nowhere for the batchlor party.
all the guys there were the, 'little kids' i used to watch out for when i was in high school.
they kept feeding me copious ammounts of beverages and controlled substances.
the one guy, 'sqeelan wheelan*' kept coming up and saying, "dude man, i ****ing love you, man."

i left at about 3am with no idea where i was, and i had no clue how i got home.
    yeah wedding are evil.

*named as such due to squeeling like a pig when he broke his leg in jv football. :lol

I think my body officially hates beer and alcohol. I almost threw up after a few drinks the other night. I'm gonna stick with juice for my wedding. :)

Hate to say it...Hmong Weddings, depends if they do it the right way and ask for the daughters hand in marriage or if they run away and elope the guy is screwed. Plus you gotta pay for her...Luckily I'm chinese, but my wife is hmong...I told them I ain't getting drunk and eatting boiled pig fat. What can they do, stop the wedding? Lucky for me, my wife is more rebelous then me...All she had to say was, try and stop me...haha

Fact: Dowry as we all know is paid in cash by the groom's family to the bride's family. It's not a bride price as the Western folks want us all to believe. It's use as a form of respect to the bride's family. It's a promise from the husband (groom) that he will be faithful to his wife and his in-law.

Hmong and all other Asian practice dowry in some shape or form (money or gifts).

Hmong or not... even the Chinese practice Dowry. So yes, if you and your wife rebel that is up to you. It's not about eating pig fat or drinking... it's about respect and the communion (The act of or an instance of sharing or feelings) of two families. When you marry, the main purpose of a marriage is and will always be about the love of two people coming together but the back drop of the wedding is so much more involving... it's the bonding of two families, making one strong ties.

IMHO on this whole Hmong marriage thing... Me, I am the way... I am the bridge to the families involve... I am to understand how each family feel due to the circumstancea, that is my purpose. How do I know... because I am a MeiKhong (similar to a Priest or a Judge in Western culture) and yes, I am certified by the state of MN... I am the person who connects and bridge the two families.

It's not a Hmong thing... it's an Asian thing and I'm sure if you look through other cultures you'll find there are similar traits as well.

I understand it was practiced in the asian cultures in the past and few practice it now. Chinese practice it today in a form of red envolopes ( chinese new year, weddings, etc.) From my experience in the hmong community the dowry "thang" is still practiced today...But most, with the wrong intension. I see more greed than "LOVE" between the two families. Drinking yourself to death or eating boiled pig, that is just part of the culture, I can understand that...I always like to put some humor in every situation...If you think I'm insulting any culture, that is your call. I respect all, but when it degrades my values, that is where I draw the line...Their are good and bad with every culture, in reality the chinese and hmong weren't really the best of friends in the past. But I do not live in the past and do not practice traditional ways, I just do what I feel is right. Rather than just trying to please my so called "elders". I know there is a lot of people that may agree with me and some that may disagree, everyone has the right to live and practice what they want to do in life.

This is the pick and chooses generation. They pick what's do’ able in their culture and carry that forward, what's not are left with the past. Evolution right?

No pun intended towards you. I'm all about giving as much correct info as I can because I deal with questions every day. It is my job to give correct info... even when I or other makes a joke out of the ordinary; I want the readers and listeners to first get the correct information across loud and clear before hand.

If I'm to add to the insult and make a joke out of it... it's an advantage to the uninformed and the ignorant. I understand that when you joke, you can joke among the like minded but you never know who lurks these board to fuel the racism and hatred. Me, I'm just trying to hold down as many fires as I can because of the negativity that's going on about the community. Too much bad publicity has been said and printed and not enough good is mention as a whole to society.

I agree with your comment above and share the laughter as well… I'm sure we both share similar ideas or what not... agree or disagree to differences but that's what makes us individuals right. As I’ve stated… I just want the readers to have a better understanding of the culture before they take the thread to a different level.

    Happy posting...

On a side note: So... who's up for a Hmong wedding? I have one I'll be attending this coming Feb 17th... care to come and participate (learn, watch, ask questions away etc...)

Although I sometimes feel that the dowry payment is stupid, it all boils down to Vic's point. It's what seperates us from the animals.

Fong, I agree with you and Sogonerg completely on the dowry issue but I wouldn't choose the word stupid though Hahaha. When ever you're ready to tie the knot... let me know... I'll be your MeiKhong if need be :) nah, skip that... we'll just have it the Western style... Church, White gowns and garter... plus Tux and ties. I'll just be your wedding crasher LOL.

    Comrade,

    Vic

You know what Fong, Vic can be your Meikhong and I'll be the Cook...Since it is real easy to just throw a pig in the pot of boiling water. I'll skin it and deep fry that sucka...Crispy crunchy skin...mmmm...I'll even bring some oyster sauce to give it some flavor. I can't take the heat, so you have to grind your own peppers. I say just go to Tai Hoa St. Paul and buy a whole roast pork and grub. You can have the apple that they put in its mouth.

you since I married my wife..I came to love "Laab" I think that is how you spell it...I think that is a great dish instead of just boiling the cow and eating it like porridge. I just had it during my wife's aunt funeral. Since I'm asuming they kill cows to for weddings. As long as it isn't *Hot* and rare ( I like mine cooked WELL DONE)...I'll eat it like a pig, especially with the stomach...ahhhhh...*drool*
