I just got back from Morrie's, getting my timing belt replaced. However, in the process of replacing the timing belt they decided that all of my pulleys, the timing belt tensioner, and my radiator all needed to be replaced (apparently it had sprung a leak...). This was in addition to the intermediate service due for my mileage, so my total came to just under $1500 with the discount applied. This is by far my most expensive service visit, and by coincidence this is also the first time I told them about my MNSOC discount BEFORE they started (instead of afterwords, at the cashier's counter). 2004 WRX wagon, 106k miles on the ODO 100% stock until 95k Stage 2 at 105k What I'm wondering... is this normal? Just a coincidence that all these things needed to be replaced at around the same time?
That sounds about right with the radiator, actually you made it a good distance. I've seen them start leaking at 50k before. I'm already budgeting for a Koyo and I'm not even at 40k yet. TBT and pulleys tho, I don't know.
YES... I did a timing belt recently and we didnt replace all the pulleys only the tensioner... something happened 4 days later and bent valves... still to this day the only thing that we can determine is one of the bearings got hot, seized and jumped the belt... wasnt my fault but still... it sucks... (this is what we guessed with 3 subaru techs trying to work it out) it all adds up but best to do it while it apart one time not multiple times... just means more $$$$ in one go... reality is... you probably could have gotten it done for half that through local members on this forum using GENUINE SUBARU parts, (some even actual Subaru Master Techs)... but it is done, and you can enjoy knowing your car is in top shape!!!
I don't see anything odd with this really. the tensioner often needs to be replaced with a t-belt and the radiator leaks are super common as well. by pullies, do you mean the idler pullies for the t-belt or your accessory/crank pullies?
Idler pulleys. Yeah, I'm going to look into getting the service done through guys on here in the future. Problem is diagnosis -- need to know what's wrong first. I suppose I could take it to Morrie's every 4000 miles and have them do an inspection or something... ?? I don't trust myself to be able to diagnose every problem yet. :biggrin:
yea the idlers are very common when doing a t-belt as well. all in all, it sounds pretty routine for your mileage
they don't crack and pee coolant all over. (all aluminum as opposed to the stock plastic/aluminum piece). they also have a greater volume if you need that sort of thing
Bought them through my work fool. And paid one of my tech 100 bucks to do it. What can I say. I am lazy.
My radiator cracked last winter (as in winter '07-'08). I have 53k miles right now, so I figure I had around 42k when it cracked. '05 wrx wag. I went koyo because it was only $75 more then the stock number.
You should've gotten a discount for them having to do timing belt with radiator off. Makes it easier.
He did. We charged him no labor to do the install. And Jamusix, I was the one that did all the work. I know it may come to some surprise, but it's not that uncommon that the idlers will need to be replaced upon t-belt replacement. I plan on having to replace all mine when I do it (about 2,000 miles away). Your radiator was just something I noticed. That saves you from having further problems down the road with a bigger leak. A Koyo would have been a better part to replace it with, but we don't stock them unfortunately. I do apologize though for not having any better solution for you stalling issue. That was something that would've needed lots more time to dig into.
