although I understand this and heard this message over and over is true...there's still a significant increase in torque with the 2.5 block and wrx heads

Yah don't need an sti ecu, but a 32bit ecu would be better than the 16bit.

yea there are a ton of guys out there that built hybrids with no problems on knock sensors, including myself. no avcs, no codes, no problems thus far. ive been on it for about 1000 miles. boost is spiking a little bit but can be fixed with a larger turbo, supporting mods, and tune. i had a talk with uncle bullwinkle not too long ago and of course did some research myself, the 32 bit is indeed better as far as tuning but you dont need it. the 16 bit will run the car fine and you can still yield safe power out of it after an open source tune.

did you do the tuning your self or did you have someone else do it, or did you go to a shop?

i have all supporting mods and went with td05/06 18G 8cm...and aps top mount..with dw 750...rite now...because of my tranny and no moneyz...i don't want to push it more than 18psi..which is what i'm tuned for rite now...i really want to run 22-24...but that's not for awhile..

The obvious would be that you already own them:eek3:
I thought I saw something in a magazine that the 2.0 heads actually have larger ports than the 2.5 heads too.

not even close, they are the same intake/exhaust port casting. Difference are the CAMS and ones w/ and w/o AVCS.

Flatline: You need to get a ride in the EJ225. You've seen what it can do!

yeah, its money invested either way.

do you know how much it would be to balance the crank on a used one?

not sure... i called a machine shop yesterday and they said it would be $10 per cylinder for a hone... and when my buddy got his honda crank polished (not balanced) i think it was about $40, i would gues it would be somewhere between $50 and $100 to get it balanced.

an update for anyone who cares:

I was out of twon over the weekend but got some work done last week. my block is pretty much stripped, just down to the last head.
when i took my oil pan off i wiped my finger ina corner of the block, down by the oil pan and had lots of sparklies on my finger. i saw this as a good sign, a sign i am not taking apart a good motor lol.

i have found a built sti shortblock: Mahl pistons, Eagle rods, acl bearings. it origionally came from MAP. I hope to be picking it up this week!

I plan to have my transmission apart and dropped off to diversified cryogenics by the middle of this week.

My new turbo is on the way: Slowboy racing GT12!

i also picked up a equal length header and matching up pipe. i plan to be heat wrapping the header, downpipe, and my top 2 intercooler pipes. i want to keep the heat where it is supposed to be.

ARP head studs and Cometic head gaskets are on the way from MAP.

i also took this time to order myself some Ksport coilovers!

Its going to be a whole new car! I cant wait.
I hope to have it back on the road the weekend of the 16th! wish me luck!

werd DO IT UP! i heard cryo treating gears are almost pointless, they strengthen them a little bit but not by much. kind of like the RA gearset... people still break them on stage 2 power levels. you will be beyond stage 2 ..... you should look into it. good luck!

^ What he said. They may end up more brittle than before, which is not what you want. Making metal have a higher hardness factor is good for brakes, but not things that you want to still have some ductility, like gears.

i have heard both sides to the argument about the gears, i dont see how treating them would hurt so i am going to do it, i am always very nice to my tranny anyways so i hope it will last.

Its a chunk of change to spend on something that is questionable in it's effectiveness.

    Who is re-assembling it?

    You have a shop press?

Also, if you are doing the "gears", you have to do the input shaft.

no i have not but it will still be cheaper than a ppg gearset, which i do not have the money for at this time, or an sti 6 speed. both of which are out of my range at this time.
