ok, well this upcoming spring I will be graduating and since I basically have a job set up already, I want to look into getting a WRX (I have a 99rs right now). My questions is, hypothetically speaking of course, if I were to sell my 99rs...should I do private party or go to a dealer and how much should I look at getting out of it. It's not in the greatest of condition and it's got a little cancer on both rear quarters.

It's crossed my mind to keep it and fully restore it later on in life when I have a little more money, but dragging it along with me everywhere I go until I am actually able to put money into it would be a pain in the ass.

Good to hear things are going well for you...

My experience with getting a new vehicle and keeping the old one:

Plan on using the beater as you're daily driver...and drive you're baby on weekends and special occasions...this lasts for maybee a month or two, till driving a nice new car makes you realize how much of a POS you're other car is (remember, this is my experience, I'm not sayingy you're car is a POS).

Proceed to drive new car everywhere...before you know it, the old car has been sitting in the same spot for 6 months, either under a snow bank, or with weeds growing up around it...

After a while, someone will ask if you want to sell it, or a landlord or some other authority figure will pressure you to get rid of it...

I like what the other guys suggested...wish the new subies looked like the late 90's models.
I'd say if you want to sell it, there wouldn't be much harm in trying to post it for sale here first (it's free afterall).

The only cars worth trading in are high priced ones (like > $10k) where the spread between trade-in & private sale is basically (or almost) negated by the tax amount saved due to the trade-in.

Sell it private party. You won't get crap for it from a dealer.

Don't even think about. It would be a money pit. When the time comes, just go to CA and buy a rust-free model.

If your car is reliable you *could* keep it as a daily driver in the winter, but a WRX isn't a Ferrari, you'll get stone chips in the summer (wonderful Subaru paint), and there are the costs associated with keeping the old car (insurance. license, maintenance, parking).

Sell your car private party after you have your replacement car.

Exactly. Subarus are meant to be driven every day.

If you want a weekend car, get a Lotus.

I'd do one of two things...

Buy your new car and turn your old one into a rally car or time attack car.

    OR

Buy your new car and sell your old one private party unless you somehow get offered a nice trade-in on it. Then, drive the piss out of your new car and repeat the process.

In two years, I will finally graduate college and plan on buying a used STi. I will turn my 98 OBS into a rally car and piss-off all of the STi owners who are of the opinion that an STi is special and needs to be preserved and shouldn't be driven in the winter etc. What a bunch of crap. It's metal, plastic, rubber, and a bunch of other things that are machine crafted to form a car. It's replacable and meant to be used and then replaced. So buy your WRX or STi and drive it year round and enjoy every moment of it.

Used Elises are actually somewhat cheap, like in the neighborhood of a new STi.

Still, all things being equal I would build my own 7 or Cobra. Homebuilt cars FTW!

Exige (non S)...but same thing really. I'm really just looking for a track car, and have always wanted one. I think it's a midlife crisis.

    Sorry for jacking thread.

If this Lotus things works out I think you owe me a test drive:cool:

And to the OP. Sell it private party and buy a newer car. But if you have the time, money, ambition, etc.... a swap would be pretty cool too.
