Yesterday, we went out to lunch as a family and decided to take the Subie. When we got back, my garage looked a little different. The 2x4 framed shelving that was in the garage when I bought the house decided to let go. Most of the junk up there would have landed all over the hood of the WRX if it were in the garage. I had two of my best St. Croix rods on the front of the shelving, and amazingly, they were fine. The only real damage was the drivers side mirror on my wifes saturn broke. BEFORE (fromt a while ago): AFTER:
They're probably the reason for the shelf failing.:eek3: When you reconstruct it, you betta beef it up! Glad the rex was out when it went down though, cuz that would've been some serious damage! Hi Ted!:wavey:
They have been up there since early spring, so I don't think it was just their weight. I had just moved my ice fishing gear which would have broken for sure, along with my EZ up-which would have landed right on my wife's hood or quarter panel. Yeah, It's going to be a lot beefier and 4x bigger! Garage storage FTW!!!
i have shelves like that in my garage. fortunately they were built by a smart farmboy, so they are pretty solid.
HA, yeah. But a buddy just told me that the St. Croix rods have a livetime warranty, so I could have just gotten them swapped out at Gander or Cabella's, but I could not believe they were not snapped!
Yeah, the moron that built them used 2 1/2" sheetrock screws to hold the shelving to the wall. Subtract the 1 1/2" for the frame, and 5/8" for the sheetrock and there wasn't much holding it to the wall. Idiots. As of right now, I don't have any storage in the rafters of my garage, so here is the new garage layout first draft.
I'd consider putting in a set of pull-down attic stairs rather than a fixed stairway that will take up garage space. Something like: And it'd probably be cheaper too.
Yeah, that's the plan, but the ceiling is 116" over the floor, so i will have to make them. I would really love to get a bunch of my crap in the rafters. Where do they sell those pictured above, and will they accomidate for the ceiling being over 8'?
I've seen ones that can be trimmed to fit. Actually, the way some work, the differencebetween 116" and a 120" probably would just make the pitch a little shallower.
$98.00 at homet Depot for a 10' model. 250lb rating, wood, so it could easily be trimmed to match the height of the garage. You spend way more than that for materials to build a stairway, not even counting the time to build it.
Progress: right to left: 96" wide x 48" deep top shelf for stuff like portable fish house, golf clubs, gun/rod cases... and below that 96" wide x 24" deep general storage shelf. along the back wall: (2 count) 96" wide x 24" deep storage - 26" down from the ceiling. Hopefully this weekend: (2 count) 96" wide x 24" deep shelves along left side. Build the cabinets into the wall after leveling them. lag workbench into studs. Install 2x2's, soundproofing panels, and 4 sheets of pegboard Worklights under all shelves and (6 count) 48" double bulb fluorescents for garage lighting. Construciton sealant to seal all gaps in sheetrock.
He's got the space. He's got a lot more than I do, and I'm just finishing up a 10x12 shed in my backyard. Built to complement the architecture of the house though, not one of those fugly kits.
I stayed up until about 2:30am last night working on my garage, but it's just abou done!!! Anyone know where to get a snapper rim?
snapper rim- The John Deere in Long Lake. I forget the name but its franchised, not corporate so they are great about getting parts and have a personal feel. They have an awesome parts department, I got stuff from them all the time for our big trac at work, and farm equipment. They wont have the exact snapper wheel, but bring in your rim and tire and they will parts match it for you. If not, they will refer you to where you need to go. There used to be a great shop down the road who specialized in Snapper and Great Danes, but I think they may have jumped ship when that new bridge went in.
oh, and really jealous of your garage space. maybe its time to add a workshop on to the side of the garage! I suppose waiting for spring so you can dig, grade, and drop a conrete pad wouldnt be a bad idea, heh.
