Yeah, I'd rather go deaf and never hear music ever again than sign up for itunes. If you can find it somewhere else, then that's what I do. And not just because of that spelling error.
yea, that's them. they rock. and I already have both of their CDs. but they just released this one song, and as far as I can tell, only on iTunes. sounds like they're releasing their cover of BYOB in december (I've heard them perform this live....it's awesome!). I think they're at least as talented as Apacolyptica, who are internationally famous these days, so I'm ready to support BoR any way that I can. Yea, I absolutely despise iAnything. today was honestly the first time I've ever considered installing itunes on my computer, so I thought I'd offset anything they might have gained from that by publicly bashing their epic spelling error.
I have a iPod and have used Rockbox on it instead on their code (http://www.rockbox.org/) And if you listen to their music on the web site the mp3 is dumped in your temporary internet directory. Copy it out and buy a t-shirt if you feel bad. Then when they release it buy the cd. I see the tune you want isn't on the web site. my bad.

i don't know why you guys think i tunes is expensive. pretty sure my library is over 10000 songs and i haven't paid for one of them. just my .02.
we are talking about actually buy songs, if you do it through iTunes it costs more than say amazon...and you can only use it with iTunes, nothing else (stupid MP4 format)
Song price depends on the song/album but yes, you can for sure find some better deals at Amazon. Both DRM and DRM-free tracks offered by Apple via iTunes are AAC. Both files will play on an unlimited amount of iPods and iPhones. The DRM tracks will play on up to 5 pcs at once while the DRM-free songs can play on an unlimited number. Also, the DRM-free songs can be converted within iTunes to mp3 with a few clicks and played anywhere. If you are going to hate on a company at least know what you are talking about.
+1 The software is free. Using the software is free. You don't have to buy anything. There are no fees for using it. You can configure it to import CDs into MP3 format so you can share it. All the functionality is there. So, for all of you iTunes haters, I have a question; What's so bad about it? I've got 15k or so songs/tracks in my library, PERFECTLY organized, with zero effort on my part. If I have a CD in hand, I set it in my CD drive and import it with great quality into organized folders with automatically imported album art. If I decide to buy something, the quality is so close to perfect I can't tell the difference (iTunes+ vs. wav). I get album art in PDF form with my online album purchases. I usually get bonus tracks when buying albums. It still costs less than buying the CD. It all dumps down onto my iPod photo, which plays it wonderfully through the iPod interface on my headunit. Is iTunes a terrible product? No way. It's a great product. It does just about everything very well. Does it cost more than alternatives? Well, yeah, probably quite a bit. The convenience of the system is more than worth an extra dollar per album or whatever it may be.
Why do I hate iTunes? Are you completely missing the file format issue with players NOT made by apple??? Convenience? Where is the convenience in HAVING to buy a player made by the same people that made the point of purchase software?
I don't like the fact that the installer for it is.... ALMOST 90 MEGABYTES. A music player does NOT need to take up that much crap. Its also a memory hog.
It may download as an AAC file by default, but it is DRM free, and iTunes even has a simple conversion wizard built right in that lets you re-encode to MP3 if you like. You don't HAVE to buy anyone's player. iTunes purchases will work on anything.
The last time I loaded itunes, it loaded up a bunch of wares discreetly that I didn't need. Some sort of bot that connected to apple directly among other things. Last time I checked, I can create a directory to store MP3 files in and burn them and play them on as many PCs as I want without the need of another application to do so. Plus I can buy MP3s from other places for, sometimes, less money, and I don't need an (iPod, iPhone) to play them. I just copy them to my Sansa player as if it were a USB harddrive and unplug the USB cable and go. I can do all of those things without downloading and installing a piece of software from Apple that infects my computer with some sort of comm-bot and one of the most annoying auto-updaters I've ever dealt with. Yeah, it's free, but so is a mouth full of urine from a public port-o-let or a kick in the junk. Sometimes free isn't better.
Yes, this definitely bugs me. Trying to push Safari and QuickTime down your throat really sucks. I usually uninstall the Apple Software Update from Add/Remove Programs and then you'll only be asked within iTunes for an update when one is available, which is how it should be to begin with.
Hey, just refuting the "HAVE to use" their music players. Because you don't. side note: I've bought all of one album from iTunes. But it's a great player when you have an assload of unsorted music and just want to rely on ID3 tags to find stuff.
another side note--i found foobar 2000 to be a great alternative to winamp, WMP etc for a simple media player with, as you point out, ID3 organization/recognition. It also plays FLAC, which is nice.
We tried that trick with Quicktime the other night (Firefox directs you to install QT when you try to play embedded mp3s) and I went ahead and tried that. As soon as I deleted the updater and the bot it wouldn't work and would crash Firefox. Deleted QT app and it worked fine again, but couldn't listen to mp3s online. I'm going to set MIME types to use WMP to fix that issue. With that said, Apple might be catching on to people deleting and shutting off the bot-ware and updaters.
I'm outta the loop on this one. I still just buy cds and then put them on my itunes thingy. I guess like millions of other people I just used itunes cause I have an ipod:dunno: I don't know a thing about all the numbers and letters you guys are talking about.
I tried that one for awhile. Pretty cool player, but the nerd factor with having to customize everything was over the top. It just needs to play music and allow you to search your library for chrissakes!
i noticed windows media player being a memory hog, and wanted something else--the nerdiness was/is attractive, but really the FLAC compatiblity was nice after downloading a few dozen albums and not having a player able to play them.
iTunes does a hell of a lot more than just play music, between the store, home sharing, playing through remote hardware, file conversion capabilities, etc... I'm not arguing that it's become fairly heavy, but it's fairly powerful also. I guess it all comes down to personal preference, but in choosing a digital audio player, I chose based on ease of use, simplicity of the software suite, third party accessories. For me, the choice was painfully obvious. I've always liked the interface on iPods, iTunes is so easy children and the elderly can use it without frustration, and I'm not sure I've ever seen a car stereo that could control any Creative Labs, Sony, Sandisk, or other players. Closest you could get for third party compatibility is the Zune, and well, they're nice, but they pale in comparison. To touch on your statement, no, I'm not missing the file format issue, I'm merely stating that just because the iTunes/iPod combo isn't your cup of tea doesn't mean that it's not a good setup. 99% of the people I know who have some vendetta against the iPod are only mad because they either couldn't afford one or didn't want to spend the money on one. Like most aspects in life, pay to play. Edit > Preferences > General tab - uncheck "Check for updates automatically"
ugh....should have known I couldn't poke fun at apple without it turning into a poo-flinging match. mnstupid strikes again I have an organization system for my .mp3s that has worked for me since my first computer. I'm used to winamp and I love my Dell DJ.

I would care to disagree. I think this thread has gone just fine without people attacking others. My pro and cons of itunes: Pro: Easy organizing. Auto download of album covers If your into legal download methods of getting music, it's one of the easiest out there Cons: Have to have a CC tagged to your itunes account no matter what I have to have this program to use my ipod Apple trying to shove the rest of their crap down my computer (F off safari. FF for life)
