aight, i got a 93 wagon 1.8 awd and yesterday i was going up hill on a hwy entrance and it was like forever just to reach the hwy. i was wondering if anybody have boost'd a 1.8 before and if so, will the mani from the 2.2t and 2.0 fit?????? will the tdo4 be too much power for the 1.8? my other option is to swap for a 2.2 or even a 2.5, then boost it. lmk what u guys think. oh, im trying to spend as lil as possible too. thanks
My advice: Never talk about engine swaps and then say you want to spend as little as possible. You will need a good budget for most swap scenarios. The EJ20 is a fantastic option as it's inexpensive and has everything you can want for modification. However, it will take money to get it in, so you need to budget appropriately for that. Also, factor in the time it will take you, including possible downtime of not having the car. What do you ultimately want to do with the car? What kind of budget are you working with? Can you afford to be without the car for a week or two?
Scoobysport made more whp then my turboed 2.2 with their 1.8, turbo it, the worst thing that can happen is you blow the 1.8, and they are a dime a dozen. PM me if you want info on turboing your n/a. mine is still runnin strong.
i have a td04 off a wrx for sale and i will have a 2.0 shortblock that will need a rebuild for sale soon too, pm me if you are interested. also have the stock header and up pipe from the wrx for sale!
I am going to go out on a limb here and say that your stock 1.8 clutch isn't going to handle 200whp or more. And $2k won't get an EJ205 into your car with all the necessary parts, unless you are pretty handy with a welder along with being able to completely tear down and bastardise your wiring harness.
sorry but i have a question on a JDM swap i hear that usually when you swap a version 8 EJ20T STI JDM engine that you usually don't have to much trouble finding USDM parts that will be compatible with the engine is this true?
Turbo 1.8L, sounds cool. I'd bet that be fun to drive. Make sure you use a sound maker too "Ppppsshhhhhhh!" wish I had an older wagon.
I did my EJ205 swap for under $2k. No welding involved, but I am pretty handy with the wiring bastardization. It can be done, right now I'd bet that it could be done for around $1500 if you did the work yourself and spent some time looking for good deals on the parts.
I didn't say it could not be done, but you are a prime example of the patience and thoroughness it takes to do it right on the cheap. You don't see it very often since most people won't do the homework .
There's a guy on Craigslist selling his Legacy 2.5Turbo engine w/6spd tranny for $3.5k. http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/pts/775815295.html Hope its still available.
I spent a good $7000 to get my POWER to be like how it is w/ the current turbo setup. Next is the strong tranny to hold that power. So to speak, with all the things done to my car to make ti the way it is, costed me $17,000.
i would love to have the power that fuji's pushing, but yeah, i just want to go up hill, lol. yeah imma boost the 1.8 and like curly said, if it blows, laugh and do it all over again. but these are sum good info though, thanks fellas
if you don't go crazy, i have seen that 1.8 actually hold up pretty well... and with how cheap you can get them and everything, might as well if you want more power.
turbo the 1.8. that is the most sturdy engine subaru has ever built. or you could just swap a 2.2 into and gain a pretty good bump in power for minimal money. or do the same with a 2.5. a 2.5 will get you a 45 hp bump that will be very reliable. another very interesting combo is a 2.5 block with 2.2 heads and some cams from delta cam. i think the 1.8 heads and the 2.2 heads are the same but not 100% sure so you might just need a 2.5 shortblock. matt monson, a guy in colorado, has built a few of these and they make great low end torque. not the greatest at higher rpms (over 5.5K) but very good for things like rallycross and daily driving.
