I got a hard lesson in seasons today. I finally got my MAC(AEM, E-Boost, etc) BCS working today and did some tuning. Needless to say I couldn't run near the boost that I could when it was 30 degrees out. Before I was completely limited by my injectors, spooling up to 28psi and tapering down to 23psi at redline, maintaining a hair under 90% IDC across the board. The torque was pretty nuts with these old 22T heads. This was with about 50 degree inlet temps, and before I made my shroud to direct a lot more through the IC.

Today on the other hand, I was knock limited. My air temps from last summer have come down about 25 degrees or more from making the shroud to under 120 from over 140 degrees, which is nice, but still isn't the same as 30 degree weather. Over 5k rpm's was fine, and I was able to tune up to about 23psi with afr's in the low 11's. It was at peak VE in the 4500-5k range that was trouble. Knock reared it ugly head and didn't let me spool it up over 22psi like before. I had to add some fuel, pull some timing, all that fun stuff.

So, do I make a methanol setup with a Sureflow pump and a nozzle and line for about $130-150, or just save my duckets to get the 2.5 DOHC heads on, which will cost me roughly $800, which includes injectors(1000cc), Cometic headgaskets, a nice timing belt, and other stuff. I have to redo my uppipe and downpipe to get them on too.

My Link Plus can control the methanol injection and I can install a switch to turn on the methanol setup and switch the fuel and timing maps at the same time.

    Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm..............

Well, IMO, you might as well save up for the heads, because you're getting bigger injectors with it also.
Then try going from there and then see if Meth is needed or not.
You can always add meth later.

They won't help with the knock, just open up the breathing up top. My powerband would be quite a bit different, but I'd gain a lot in the end. Possibly 50whp.

So that does or doesn't fix the problem you are having now? Sounds like it doesn't where Meth would...

True, methanol would let me turn up the wick a bunch. Its only in the midrange though. I need to do some more playing around.

Plan long term. I'd say heads for sure, but add the meth whernever you want for the added security.

Heads with injectors. I know you like the torque (don't we all) but if you want to utilize the turbo to its potential then you'll need bigger injectors. Plus, 50 WHP (even though it will be higher in the power band) is a STEAL for $800.

But you knew I would say this.

Heads, injectors, and stuff and then afterwards put the meth injection. Personally, due to the difficulty in getting meth I would start spraying water (or windshield washer fluid if you must have at least some meth) and see what that does for you.

And if you're going to be doing all the work anyway, get some phenolic spacers and start coating stuff and lower your underhood temps at the same time.

I was planning on getting the injectors soon anyways, but I still need a bunch of other stuff to get the heads on. I also need to re-work my uppipe and downpipe since the turbo sits too close to the old 22T head as is. There is about 2.5" of room to move the turbo up. Its going to be more than a bolt-on affair no matter what.

As far as coating goes, I can always pick at that stuff down the road. It would add a decent percentage of what it would cost to get them on.
