So I guess this is another noob question, I'm wondering what effect running high boost generally has on turbos, guess I never though about it until now. Talk to me about this issue, soon enough I hope to have my car on a cobb stage 2 map. I doubt I'll ever go beyond a stock turbo, but one never knows...
Well, what kinda of boost are you talking about?? The cobb maps already but the boost up a bit over the stock numbers. I don't think running a bit more boost (1-2psi) is really going to hurt your stock turbo. If you wanted to run 20psi you will probably start running into some longevitity problems. Russ
but who cares if you blow up a stocker. i mean i've heard of many guys running 21psi on their td04 with water/alky and running fine for a few years. And the reason i say who cares is you can pick up a td04 for like 150, i really think the benefit outways the cost here. lets start blowing turbos w00t w00t (td04's of course)
look into the compressor maps, look at the effective range for the turbo. spinning something harder than it should be will shorten the life of the turbo, but i'd wager that the end result of a 'higher egt/less advance/leaner afr' tune will also take it's toll on your internals.
i agree get ahold of the compressor map and don't exceed efficiency otherwise your not makin much power and probably hurtin your engine
http://www.mnsubaru.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11277 Here it is. IMHO, anything in the >150,000 rpm range will certainly shorten the life of the turbo. In other words, try and keep it under 18psi (assuming a 2.5psi pressure drop @ the IC) in the midrange and under 13psi at redline.
Thanks guys, no I'm not worried at all about blowing up my stocker, (wow that would suck though huh? ) I just never though about this until it came up recently on a couple different posts. I actully put in my first post that I wasn't worried about the stocker, but deleted it, because I didn't want an answer only specific "my turbo and car", I just wanted to start a discussion on it, lets of great answers, heck on a sunday too, you all rock, but you know that so my saying that really means nothing, but you all still rock, please by all means feel free to add to this thread if you have more to comment on. Turbos are all still pretty new to me, even though I've had the car for around an year and a half. But I'll try and keep the stocker under 1.8 bars just incase lol
