is the stock turbo worth rebuilding? I bought my 05 legacy gt limited with a bad turbo and a good used turbo to replace the bad one with. the bad turbo was really bad "loose parts on both sides":eek3: kyle
It will cost more to rebuild. You could find a use td04 for around $100(good condition). otherwise its time to upgrade. VF39 goes for $350+/-50, depending on condition.
I would say that if your current turbo hasn't allowed either wheel to contact housing it is worth rebuilding. The cost for rebuilding without re-balancing is about the same as buying a used td04. Given the similar cost and relative ease of refurbish I would rather redo my old turbo as I would know the condition in the end versus a used turbo of possible questionable lineage. Uh, why are you guys talking about td04s? For one, they won't fit on his car (well, at least without a bunch of new parts), and two, they are smaller than the vf40 that comes on the LGT. I'm not sure how "rebuildable" IHI VF turbos are. I wonder if Blouch or some other company has services where they can stuff larger compressors into the housing?
oops I thought the T-legs had td04's, they aren't supposed to be rebuildable either either way, if you already have a replacment in good working order do you really need to rebuild the original?

well the first one broke.....I guess it's always nice to have a spare. It really doesn't mater. Both wheels touched...... Heck, touched isn't really the right word, lets say........ bashed! in fact the turbine wheel broke off the shaft! I guess, I was just wondering if someone could resurface the housing and rebuild it. being that it's a VF40 It sounds like I can't. I bought the car with the damaged turbo so I don't really know what caused this. I fear that it's the cat in the uppipe braking apart!:dunno: have a look at the destruction!
What caused it was lack of oil changes or long intervals inbetween, screen gets plugged, starves the turbo for oil, and the bearings start to cook, clearances start getting huge, large enough to where the wheels start to touch the housing. REMOVE your screens in the banjo fitting on the head and the turbo before you destroy another turbo.
I kinda wondered if it was oil starvation but it just looked like something hit the wheel? as for the intercooler, I had so much oil in everything that it all needed to be removed and cleaned. the only thing that I couldn't get cleaned (or figure out how to clean) was the downpipe cat. FYI this wasn't the first turbo to go bad on this car. and thats why I was kinda wondering if its the cat coming apart in the uppipe. so everything I've done so far is as follows: changed turbo and gaskets cleaned air hoses to and from intercooler cleaned the intercooler cleaned inline oil filter replaced an oil drain line coming off the turbo (it was looking a bit bad) changed plugs changed oil after a few heat cycles (flushing the oil system) when I bought this car, I know the guy that owned it before me drove it hard and put it away hot, (never really letting the turbo cool.) Knowing that, I figured that there was going to be some problems but for $5000 for a 2005 legacy gtl I could afford to do some work
So did you take the screens out of the banjo bolts? You can keep them in if you want, but its peace of mind to take them out.
No I kept it in but I'm looking at doing some exhaust work of some kind soon so I maybe I'll remove it while I'm in there.
true but I thought about removing it all together but with how bad the oil looked I figured I should keep it in for good measure. even thought it was cleaned, I may still check it out when I do some other work to see if it stayed that way.
Thanks for this thread, provides a nice checklist to look through. I'll be helping my brother pull apart his 05 LGT for the first time this week, as well. It made lots of nasty noises on the way out, we're hoping it's only the turbo that's failed.
Yeah this one also made lots of noises.... it's kind of hard to explain the noises but it kinda sounded like "sharp" porcelain bouncing around inside steel.
