well....3 of us went out to have some fun in the snow covered roads and after the fun, I end up with a failed 2nd-to-3rd syncro. Grinds anywhere shifting above 3k going into 3rd from 2nd and pulls out of 3rd to 4th with a not-so-good feel.

    NOW!

I probably want to get this finished and fixed by spring or when there's no more snow. I have thought of solutions.
I'm thinking about saving for a RA gearset and the 2nd to 3rd gear syncro and/or 3rd to 4th syncro. NOW Should I throw in a CUSCO tarmac gear (center diff) as well (because mine is making noises unless it's coming from the un-shimmed rear diff)?

OR just get a 2nd-to-3rd and 3rd-to-4th syncro and reshim the rear diff and save a lot of $$ for the STi 6spd? OR take apart an older Legacy 5spd tranny and take that syncro and gears out to a custom ratio'ed gear box?

I think I need the dials with guages so I can check the shimmings and stuff like that. AND I NEED SHIMS so I can adjust the shims....lol

*my gosh I'm getting myself into lots of mechanical failer..*

Sorry to hear of that, Mr. Fuji. You know who to talk to buy a used MY99 RS tranny. You just need to say "I."

The junkyard tranny I swaped into my wagon was pretty thrashed. Syncro for 3rd is shot... if I dont hit it at the sweet spot and match revs it's a real dog to get into 3rd. The other syncros are almost shot and the shifter is sloppy [xx(]

You get used to it and hit it right ;) As long as the gear works you are good to go right?

Not to split the tread but... what is everyones take on doing the cryogenic process on the syncros and gears. I have a sneaking suspicion that all the downshifting to 1st is going to screw 1st gear in my car.

Cryo treating any metal makes the metal a lot harder and raises its yield stress. If gears see a lot of pounding abuse, it seems like a natural descision to get them cryo treated, IMO.

I'm totally with the cryo treatment. I would do that to my gears if I had the chance. The RA gearset from RalliSpec come cryo treated, they can handle a bunch of HP, IMO.
