the cel is back. It kinda was there before but I just ignored it. But today I decided I reset the ecu and see if it comes back. And the second I got on a highway it popped right out. It only comes out when I am in 4th or 5th gear and very light on the gas. I logged the car and had it tuned there were no obvious problems and the car runs well. Egt's are never higher than 14-15k. At first I though my bpv was leaking but I got a new gasket and used rtv sealant and it does not look like there is any leakenge there. Where should I look? I had an egt probe installed in the header a few month ago, could it be leaking there?
    Need your help and advice!
    Thanks, Taras

14-15k?? So you need to rebuild then, because right now you have a bunch of melted aluminum in your oil pan. If you are talking 1400-1500, you need a better number than that. 100 degrees is alot at the stage. were you are wot, just cruising (at what rpm), increasing in speed??? Lots of little details are needed. If you were just cruising at say 3k (70mph) and your egt's are over 1400, you have some issues. A good tune will get you right around 1375 or so, you start getting over 1400 you are either really lean or your timing is jacked. What do your fuel trims look like??

sorry I ment 1400- 1500. On a highway crusing its around 12-13 and at wot at 4-5k I am around 14-15.5. I had the car retuned and all the logs look perfect. I just got the car on ramps and noticed that the o2 sensor that is closest to the up pipe and the header had an exposed wire and it looked like the actual wires cooked a lilttle. I don't know if that could be the problem but I put some heat resistant tape.

Nuke, I love my car, but If I had funds I would get a new lgt for sure... Some time...

Russ, didn't you have a part in tuning this my car at some point? The tune was changed very little only the boost was changed somewhat.

I am sure that fried wiring on an 02 sensor wouldn't be helping much especially if the signal from said sensor isnt working or is working suspectly

Yes, and put your mouth on the sensor, blow very hard, if it doesn't get hot fast enough, you need a new one

are you making adjustments to your ecu yourself or having someone who knows what they are doing do it?

And drive with a turboback and stock map? Not a good idea.

And its not a problem is not the map there is a mechanical problem somewhere.

And by the way during my investigation in the engine bay i saw that there is a little oil leak in the cam gears. It was not too much but enough to make an oil stain on the skid plate.

What do you want to know about it?

Running a TBE and no tune was the norm in 02 and 03 and it really wasn't a problem. Did you log your short/long term fuel trims?

me and Nate, drove the car around for a couple hours logged it and tweaked the boost a little and richened it a bit. It drives much nicer now. Nate looked at everything and he said it all looks good. He would have noticed if there was a problem.

How about cam gear cover, is a little bit of oil ok or its a future problem? I noticed the other cover has some oil dripping too.

That what i think. There might be a leak somewhere. But its not a pre turbo leak, i looked at up pipe and down pipe and the header all look fine. it all looks solid. I think it might be faulty sensor. But another thing now is that cam seal leak that i found today. I would not try to fix that myself, so i wonder how much would replacing the cam seal cost?

Ok, you REALLY need to dial in your egt's. a 1000 degree sweep is the difference between a REALLY bad tune and a good tune. Sounds like a crappy tune or a bad location egt probe install. Again, cruising the freeway (70mph and 3k), your egt's should be right around 1350-1375 and WOT you should never go over 1550 and from 5.5-6k up you should be in the 1500 area. The egt's are important when you are over 5k, that is where the timing is the most important. If your egt's are climbing really fast, it could be not enough timing. Since so many people are afraid of nuking their motors, the easy thing to do is not add any timing. Then we have local shops that tell people egt's are only good for airplanes, and then people don't use that VERY important tool to help them tune. So since this car is getting some miles on it and I am guessing the front o2 sensor is original, go buy a new one and replace it. Does this cel happen just at cruising or at WOT?? Usually you get that cell from f'd up fuel trims. When the fuel trims get pegged to one side or the other (rich or lean) you will get a cel.

As for running a stg2 car without a tune one it, you have NO IDEA how good you do have it. When that car was new and for the first 2 years the wrx was over in the US, there was not engine management other than a MBC. And once there was engine mgt, they were not user adjustable until the UTEC came out. You kiddies have it so good now, and think you know everything.

thanks Russ. I will take another look at my egt's. Its a litle hard to do when driving on 94 from hannepin to snelling in a rush hour. But yeah the cel only comes up when crusing without any boost and when there is practicaly no gas. However now I have a bigger problem I think. My cam gear seals are leaking. How bad is it? I mean will it get much worse over a short period of time? How much will a repair like that cost me at a dealership? Is anyone here replaced cam seals on their or someone else car?
Lots of questions from a newbie. Thanks in advance.

ok, do I just got to school and looked at my egts very closely. I was in 4th gear going 65 at 3500rpms the egt was at 1325 and if I went slower like 60 it went down to 1300.

Ok, first off; I don't know of many tuners who tune closed loop fueling if the airbox is stock. I know I certainly don't. If his cruise fueling is out of whack, something mechanical is affecting them.

Secondly, your WOT numbers are incorrect. 1500-1550 at WOT indicates a very safe and rich tune in terms of fueling. It's generally accepted to lean up to 1600-1650 at redline for a more aggressive tune.

Those are within range. However, it does sound like you have some (or multiple) mechanical problems. As Rich suggested, replacing some of the sensors may be a good idea.

I will replace the o2 sensor and see if that fixes the problem. I think the car drives very well and the only thing that bothers me is that cel. And now that leaking from the timing belt cover. Can someone comment on that please.

One question, why would you have a dealership rip you a new *******?

Bring it to a reputable shop, I'm sure they would be a third the cost of a stealership.

Which shop you ask? I have no idea. I'd do it myself if I were you.

Well the CEL is from your closed loop fuel trims getting too high or too low.

This could be caused by a few things:

    1. bad MAF
    2. bad front o2 sensor
    3. leaks
    4. crappy tune

I'm going to throw out #4 since you have the stock airbox and injectors. If your MAF and injector scalings are stock, there shouldn't be a tuning issue here. It's more than likely mechanical.

well, I just want to know maximum price I will have to pay. It will cost me 600 at a dealeship I will pay atlest 350 to someone on the forum that knows how to do this.

So should I start with replacing an o2 sensor in the header close to up pipe?

    Yes it can also
Try cleaning your MAF, trying another maf sensor also.

    Yes.

MAF gets dirty and reads lower than actual airflow and thus squirts in not enough gas. The front o2 sensor sees a lean condition during closed loop and thus increases the fuel trims to compensate -- and if the trims grow too large, the CEL turns on.

Taras's car had a very good tune on it when he picked it up. Since then he has changed a bunch of parts. At one poing in time I though he replaced the intake but was not sure. Either way, my points are valid for him or anyone else. I currently do no know what parts he does have on his car or the last person who touched his tune. My suggestions were a general suggestion, because those would be normal things to look at.

Also, it you are tuning WOT egt's for 1650, I wish you the best of luck. Most cars will start to have serious det issues with egt's that high. But since I am old school, I know that I don't know anything.

well you know that your old school and that counts for quite a bit.

I wouldn't take this opinion lightly, I had serious issues when my egt's were up around that high at WOT...lots of knocking going on

I'm guessing that if the MAF was borked (I love that word, lol), the car would idle like complete ass and would generally run like crap.

My guess is failing front o2 sensor or a huge post-maf vacuum leak somewhere.

^this is true. We didnt fire it up I dont think. It was on ramps the whole night... or maybe that was mine.
Reminds me of when my buddy installed a cai on a msp. Put the maf sensor on backwards... got the jdm turkey call up to 4200ish and hit fuel cut in every gear... "Wtf is wrong?" "I dunno, but sounds like a turkey. Compressor surge? Let me out. This is embarassing"

Me and Nate, logged the car a few times and there was no knock at the redline at all or anywhere else. My egts at the redline are around 1500-1500 or so.

Since i got the car the only thing i changed was Prodrive axle back, forge bpv, new oem plugs, Gpmoto elbow, and a dry amsoil filter(instead of the nasty oil K&N one.
I dont think we end up cleaning it. Remember the Clip broke off;) and we decided to just leave it alone.

I cleaned it tho. I remember some maf cleaner dripping on my fingers. Reminds me of when I worked in a chem lab and got acetone, MeOH, EtOH, etc on my hands daily.
