Just curious if anyone has any idea what type of fluid the terrible STI liquid motor mounts have in them. I pulled out of my parking spot to go to lunch today and there was a small wetspot/puddle that was not there when I got to work in the morning. Seemed to feel like gear oil but did not have the usual strong smell. Jacked her up after work to find nothing wet at all on the gearbox besides the usual little bit of damp around the shift rod. I did find the left side motor mount to be wet and figure that was the cause of my puddle. Thoughts?
Yeah I left them on the motor when it went in because I was short cash to get new mounts at the time and they were low mileage. They have been rock solid and still do not shake. I will get some GpN once my Chump car fun next weekend at Road America is done.
What's your team name for Chump? We've got a team in Rochester called Penalty Lap Racing. 4drcivicmaster is on our team, too.
Haha no kidding! We are JAB Motorsport running a 91 VW GTI. We built it 4 years ago to do stage rally but realized it would be far more expensive than we can manage to do. Chump car is much "cheaper" haha This will be the first outing for it and my first time driving instead of wrenching. I was with 3 sheets racing/Mike Wray the last two years crewing for the Ford Escort and Contour. What is your car? I'll be sure to stop by and say hi. We have a garage and are bringing my welder/compressor/plenty of other tools if you guys need anything over the weekend.
We're running a 94 Miata with a 91 engine and brakes (For AIV and reliability reasons. The car was purchased in rough shape mechanically, but the chassis is solid.) We're also bringing about half of the shop with just in case. Half of our team worked as crew and drivers for another Chump team two seasons ago and learned our lesson (Head gasket replacement on track. Turned out the head warped after overheating twice. Who knew?).
Hey didn't get a chance to track you down. How did the race go for you guys? I saw the car on track a few times both days. It was a blast driving for the first time, I didn't even post too many embarrassing lap times, or roll it 10 times Our car worked far better than I expected for its first outing. I was still working on it through the night Thursday. We made it to the track about 30 minutes before tech closed.
Kent, not sure what it is, but I know it's not supposed to leak out! It's kinda like the smoke... once you let it out of a wire or electronic component... it's impossible to put it back in.
I have no interest in making them work again, once I recover from the Chumpcar fun they will be replaced with GPN mounts and thrown in the trash as I should have done before I put the engine in. I was just curious what the "liquid" was and if it was the cause of my random small puddle because I'm weird and have to know the why of things. On a side note passing Miatas in a golf at Road America is pretty fun
Hah, yeah. We were getting passed by just about every other car out there. However, we still managed 18th place on Sunday.
Yeah great work! Just finishing these things can be quite the task if you have any problems on track. There was one point earlier on Sunday when I had your car and the black miata in front of me. You two were side by side through the carousel dukeing it out pretty good. I just had to sit there and wonder how in the world to get through. You guys going to Brainerd?
Lol, that was me driving at the time! I felt a little bad that we were being a rolling roadblock, but it's racing. I wanted to try and find that driver afterwards so we could have a beer over it, but never did. At the moment, we're not sure if we'll be able to make Brainerd as a team so we may need to wait until the next race after. I wish we could, but the finances are uncertain right now..
Haha nice! No worries it was fun playing with other cars. I had about 5 laps where I didn't see anyone in either direction. Felt like I was free lapping in Forza. I just wish the black miata would have put up a little more fight instead of waving us by but it was nice of him at the same time. I hear you on the funds part, I had to make my initial equipment purchase before the race. That was a pretty heavy hit to the wallet on top of all the consumables and parts to finish building the car. Hope you guys can make it!
