Or look for bags of vegetables or potatoes that have been sitting for a while having a chance to sprout new plants.

Get some fly tape and put it around your plants and trash can.

I was living in a house with 3 other guys and we ended up getting them. They were everywhere for the longest time. Until someone decided to clean out the pantry and we found an onion and a bag of potatoes hidden in the back. The potatoes were sprouting limbs and the onion looked like one of those nerf footballs with the tails on them. That's where the bugs were coming from, but it wasn't obvious to us at all until we decided to empty out the pantry.

Fruit flies. Throw out the trash, do the dishes, clean out the garbage disposal, vacuum under the kids' chairs, and seek out old fruit/vegetables and dispose of them.

^^This! And I also heard that they can get into the tightest spots as far as your food goes in the pantry/cupboards. There was an article on "5 fighting for you" I believe, they said to put cookies and stuff that are stored in the cupbards/pantry into sealed tupperware type containers. Maybe you can find the article on their website?
