Looking for some info about my problem. My 05 Legacy GT LTD 5spd has lost some of it's turbo power. I know I should be using 92 octane, however, I am using 89 mostly from S.A. Have not had any problems before. Just a couple of days ago I raced a newer BMW 328i, and the car didn't seem to get up and go. Now it doesn't build up that power like before, it still goes but not as hard. Wondering if anyone has came across this before or has a solution. The car has 55,xxx miles 5w30 oil.

Try not using SA gas. Maybe BP or shell. Most people here uses these two.

I've always use BP and tried Premium SA gas once and felt like I lost 50hp.

Solution? Quit being a cheap ass and put 92 in your car. Running 89 will make the engine knock and pull a bunch of timing which will result in a loss of power.

You have a car that is worth like $16k and you don't want to shell out the extra $1.50 for premium per fill up?

    ^ Agreed.

You think I liked spending $4.30 a gallon last summer? Nope. Did I? You bet. Timing maps and octanes are NOT interchangeable. Too much octane for a given map and your rod bearings hate you. Too little octane and you knock like crazy.

    So, buy friggen premium.

lol 89 from SA... on a turbo subaru... and you're wondering what's wrong?

I think a ford taurus may be more your style. Not the SHO version.

Yikes guys, don't roast him to much. Everyone has to learn sometime.

With that said, I'm with everyone above. Begin running the best quality gas you can in your car. The stock mapping is not great as it is. In addition to losing power, you will increase engine wear significantly by not running premium gasoline.

Any CEL codes or low RPM turbo whine? The 05 LGT guys seem to be having reliability issues with their VF40's.

Also, yes, 92 octane is very much required.

My 6 cylinder makes 1250 lb/ft of torque.
When I was at BP we had an 05 LGT wagon come in with 11k on the clock and running on 3 cylinders. It was an Enterprise rental car, and of course people aren't going to put premium in a rental. It had detonated a hole into the #3 cylinder, and the pieces went into the rest of the motor. New heads, cams, pistons, block and turbo later it went on it's way. You think running premium is expensive? Try getting turned down for warranty for a whole new motor. Damage caused by running improper fuel is out of your pocket, not Subarus.

My best advice, Get some octane booster and slowly filter that low octane fuel out.
Don't beat on it, low octane = retarded timing, You'll blow up your cylinders and knock the crap out of your engine.
Your ecu is programmed to ignite the premium octane with the added oxygenated combustion.

    Start using premium octane
Drive it around for 50 miles to 100 miles normally,
    Do another oil change,
Then hopefully you get your performance back,
    otherwise, get a reflash.

    If that doesn't work,
shatty gas from shatty gas stations means shatty excess dirty particles in your gas tank.
Change out your fuel filter, should only be $20.00 and get the premium fuel filter,
do it yourself and voila, see if that works.

LGTs dont have a servicable fuel filter, its in the tank. (the sock) X a million about the premium gas, we have a shell in monticello and there is a BP in big lake, USE THE 92 OCTANE!!!!!

There is no such thing as a premium fuel filter. And the "added oxygenation" has nothing to do with this. Higher octane fuels are more resistant to premature detonation (knock). What does an oil change have to do with this? Or a reflash?

Stop posting if you don't know what you're talking about.

OP: Start putting in premium gas. Still have some left regular in your tank? Fill it with premium for now and stick to premium.

Wow. Just wow. Really? The manual told you to use 92, and you didn't and now you can't figure out why your car runs like ass?
