Car related, not KY related. Anyone here use Royal Purple oil?, is it any better in a street car than Mobil 1? - namely the cost vs. benefit factor. Also, will GM synchromesh work in my tranny without problems? I changed stock fluids out for Amsoil and would not recommend it. I get grinding in several gears now and will change it out again soon. One last one - anyone here use Castrol Hypoid C for the rear diff?, if not, what would you all recommend?
Depends on who you ask. There's always someone willing to evangelize about their favorite brand of oil. Myself I think that the big jump is from dino to synthetic. The difference between the synthetics is spltting hairs, when it comes to the general purpose stuff. For specific applications, some of the specilized products offer a clear advantage, but how many cars really need someting like Redline's "Heavy Shockproof" anyhow? Not that many. My personal preferences run to Mobil 1 in the engine and Redline in the drivetrain, but I don't pretend that other combinations aren't every bit as valid. You may want to check that the rating is correct for the Amsoil you installed. No particular lube should cause issues like that unless it's the wrong stuff.
I have amsoil in the engine, tranny, and rear diff. 10k with it in and no major problems. I have 75k on the car...
I use only redline, it makes sex much better, but is hard to get of the sheets. Seriously, I would agree that most synthetics are equal given a apples to apples application. I am currently thinking about switching to a mix of redline MTL and 75-90 in my trans. I use all mobil in my engines, in truth if you change fluids at good intervals dino juice works just fine. I have had transmisions where MTL has made a night and day difference in shifting, but I bet that ams or royal have similar products that work just as well.
Well, the thing with amsoil, is that there is 3 different gear lubes, and 2 of them are not syncro friendly (too slippery). So before you make the blanket statement that amsoil is bad, you should also let us know what gear lube you are running. I have run amsoil in every part of my car since about 3000 miles and haven't had one problem, and I have about 34000 on it now. Russ
Check nasioc for "scotty's cocktail" under transmission, That's what I'm going to put in the car, lots of oil info there, lots of dos and don't according to others. Right now I have mobile one in my engine and it seems fine. I don't think pure synchro mesh is good for the tranny.
i run 10W30 amsoil in my engine for my tranny, as xcelor8 mentioned, i am running uncle scotty's cocktail". it works a wonder and it's a combination of, 2 qts of castrol hyper C(bought at pep boys), 1 quart of redline light weight shock proof(bought at LSE performance), 1 quart of GM/Pennzoil syncromesh.
BTW I finally got around to changing my 5mt fluid today with "scotty cocktail" works great, the little grind I would get occasionally seems to be gone, in general the tranny just feels way smoother, slips into gear smoother and everything. I also changed out the rear differential with some redline synthetic.
