My 99rs with 103k miles is starting to get the tickitty ticks. I figure some sort of oil additive will help fix that, however i was reading over on Nasioc how Lucas isnt good to put in your oil. I change my oil every 3,000 with Mobil 1 fully synthetic...am i safe putting in an oil additive like lucas or Marvel mystery oil? Better yet, would this even help me at all with the ticking?
ya its definitly a tick. I can only hear it if i have all my windows up, radio off, and my fan off (even my turn signal ticking drones it out). Yes, its only a tick. I had my valves adjusted and just got my timing belt tensioner replaced...and theres still that small tick. After driving for 10-15 min it gets really quiet, but still noticable if i roll up windows etc...
i think it was bobtheoilguy or whoever did tests on lucas oil additive (non-synthetic). it foamed up pretty good which i don't think is good for lubicration. i don't know how the synthetic lucas oil stuff is though. i have tried it (the synthetic one) on my old car and i didn't notice any difference.
Yes. Lucas even has demonstrations on how their product helps the oil foam which helps it climb through the gears etc. Only problem is you don't want your oil to foam as it's trapping air particles in the oil which thins it out the oil making it less effective. You ticking could mean that you are in need of a valve adjustment and not a heavier weight oil. When's the last time you had them adjusted? If that's not the case, then maybe a heavier oil will do. Don't run anything too heavy in the winter or if you do use a heavier weight, run synthetic as most of them have lower pour points.
