I'm tossing this out there to see if anyone else has the same problem and found any magic cure, treatment, or meds. I'm totally frustrated.

A number of years ago I messed up my knee jumping out of a 5 ton military truck with full gear. that was a no no....

Since then I've been plagued with a bum right knee. Turns out I messed up the patella tendon pretty bad. I've continued to injure it every winter while snowboarding. (any big landings cause shock, and shock causes pain.)

I've gone through sports medicine treatment programs, meds, and my own therapy. Everything helps a bit, but not enough...the pain is quick to come back.

Anyways, surgery is not common for this and most people just deal with it as I do. However, I'm not willing to give up snowboarding or freeriding...just ain't gonna happen.

Anyone else have this problem and have a solid remedy?

seriously at a loss and sick of the pain.

I hyperextended my knee while jumping at Hyland in my race boots (never make that mistake again!!!) in high school. screwed things up pretty good, I don't know if it's as bad as yours, but whenever I pull it a little bit, it hurts like a mother......

anyway, I got a nice knee brace, and it helps a TON when I'm out skiing. even if I botch a landing, or catch an edge racing, whatever, haven't had any major problems since.

it's not a 100% fix, especially if something happens when I'm not wearing it (like slipping on the @#$#$^#%$ing ice!), but it's a big improvement.

I've got I.T.B.S. which started in bootcamp. Basically a strained illotibial band, a main tendon that runs from your hip past your knee. My pain is focused in my knee where my tendon gets "micro tears" when it inflames and then rubs.

I have been doing a ton of stretches, and was given an IT strap that goes around my quads to create a new pivot point for my tendon. The brace helps immensely with snowboarding, hiking, all of the running I do, basically any serious physical activity. If that doesnt quite cut it, the military issued me a "refills till the problem goes away" bottle for 800mg Motrin. The anti-inflammitory effect of the med really helps.

For a tendon near your patella, I'd say look into getting a good FULL knee brace, one that has patellar support. They arent too cheap, but shouldnt be more than $100. Dont wear your brace all the time, thats a biggie. Too many guys do, and their knee adapts to the brace, messing up their normal stride.

Another thing to look into is glucosamine sulfate with condroitin. Its mainly for rebuilding cartilage, but in my case, it worked wonders to help the issue with my tendon, (I'm assuming that the tendon's original pivot point was surrounded by cartilage that deteriorated).

You can get it at GNC or wherever, and its not expensive at all. Its one of those things that your body can stop making, or just simply cant make enough of, so supplementing it can really help. look into it, and I hope some of this stuff helps you out.

My thoughts but with one correction and a few other suggestions:

The Glucosamine, Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), Chondroitin is what the pills will be labeled as, and I highly reccomend them. You can get them at walmart for ~$15 for the big bottle. When you take them, double the dose for the first week as a load. Then go down to the regular dosage until the bottle is gone. Take a month off between bottles.

The stretching is very important, I would also reccomend Meuller style sleeves/knee suppport. They're cheap and effective.

I'm not an expert by any means, but my experience with joint pain was mostly solved through yoga. The muscles around the ball of my shoulder are stretched out so the bones collide. (softball overuse injury) I could barely bowl one game without pain and loss of strength. Dr.'s tried physical therapy, cortisone injections, arthritis medication and nothing helped. The aching was unbearable after any physical activity, even vacuming. This isn't right for a 19 year old!

I started doing yoga consistently and saw strength improve greatly (plus a benefit to the rest of my body). Now I could bowl 6 games and be fine. It's been four years; I work out regularly and don't have any problems with it at all (and I don't take any pills).

    Just my experience.

I've got ITBS and I'm 20. I think its pretty normal for those of us who over-use our joints.

Blew my knee clean out the side one night many a year ago (late night wrestling match with a chick, when I went down from the knee, she literally did a pile driver into the kitchen floor!)... Took me out of riding for a winter, but was back the following. About 15mo to heal, never went to the doctor. I wore a knee brace for a couple of years after, but never had an issue. That was about 8years ago and haven't had a serious problem with it since... Now, there are plenty of other "paybacks" that I deal with all the time, but that was not one of them, luckily.
