Wait, so 2.0L NA RWD and 2.5L Turbo AWD? Hopefully the lineup changes to include a turbo rwd.

Looking forward to see how this pans out too:

Yes, the conversion rate is skewed for autos, they tax the crap out of cars there.

I love it! that thing looks bad ass. Just remove the grille and pow instant best seller.

OMG. FTW. 'Bout time Subaru brought back a two door hatch model. That thing looks sick. I'm sure by the time it gets here it'll have the 2.5 in both turbo and non turbo setups, and the price should be a lot more affordable w/out all the euro taxes. Sick. Sick. Sick.

I like it! I hope more pictures become available soon. Looks like a potential winner on the track.

It's the most stylish Subaru ever! And this striking Impreza coupé will go into production in 2010.

Joining the recently launched hatch-back model, it will allow the Japanese company to tackle the BMW 3-Series Coupé and Nissan 350Z head-on, as well as reach out to new customers.

The car has been developed as part of a joint venture with Subaru owner Toyota – the project will also spawn a long-awaited successor to the Nineties Celica. The Impreza coupé takes styling cues from the five-door model, but gets a rakish rear end. That gives it a chunky yet athletic appearance which stands out from the crowd.

Power will come from a choice of two engines, both employing the flat-four boxer layout for which Subaru is famous. There’s a normally aspirated 2.0-litre unit giving around 180bhp, or a high-performance 2.5-litre turbo powerplant borrowed from the range-topping five-door STi. The latter will deliver in the region of 300bhp.

For the entry-level machine, the Impreza’s four-wheel-drive system will be dropped in favour of a more lightweight and less expensive rear-drive set-up. That will put the emphasis on maximum driving thrills. But the more powerful car will send power to four tyres to harness all that punch.

The newcomer will go on sale first in Japan and the US, and could arrive here in the UK in 2011. In entry-level guise, it’s set to cost around £20,000, with the flagship priced at £25,000.

In a related story, Nissan is working on an affordable rear-wheel-drive coupé to sit below the 350Z. The Silvia replacement will go on sale in 2010.

There's an idea, but I'm not the type to jump ship so quickly like others. I'm a driver so I don't care what I drive just as long as I can make it go scary fast. Besides I'm sure I'll get to drive one of these sooner or later. LOL In regards to the 240, its a stepping stone for enhancing the next level of driving experience. I won't dare ya, because I know you'll be crazy enough to ride shot gun anyway. LOL :yumyum:

Part of the reason for this recent merge concept between Toyota and Subaru was to build an affordable compact sports car to compete with current rivals like the Honda's. It will be interesting to get the final specifications for this new ride and see how the final results compare especially against BMW as intended in this artical. That will be a high standard to compare with, not so much in performance aspect but the luxary aspect will be a much difficult battle considering the weight factor.

well up until now I wasn't sure I'd be buying another subaru.

Now I am certain I will own one of these as my next car.

This has pretty much renewed my faith in subaru and toyota at the same time.

It's about time for Japan to be making RWD cars again...I'm tired of these little FWD "tuner" cars...bring back the 240's, AE86's, and etc.

The 2.0L won't cost anywhere near that, otherwise they would never sell any. I bet the NA one costs less that the basic Z

Spy Shots: First images of Toyota and Subaru’s joint RWD sports car

Toyota and Subaru only confirmed in April the joint-development of a new affordable sports car and now we have the first images of actual prototypes caught while testing in a secret location in the UK. The new car will be sold by both Toyota and Subaru, although several reports claim the Toyota version will be exclusive to the Japanese market while the Subaru model will be a global version.

In a previous interview with MotorAuthority, Subaru of America product manager Dominick Infante revealed that Toyota will largely be responsible for the styling of the car while Subaru will handle most of the engineering. This means the new model will be Subaru at heart, with a four-cylinder boxer engine in both naturally aspirated and turbocharged forms planned.
Base models will be strictly RWD and have a power output of around 220hp. Though no official details have been released, it’s expected that an AWD flagship with 300hp from a turbocharged flat-four will be available as well. A six-speed will be standard, although an automatic is also expected to be available.
To complicate matters further, reports emerged earlier today claiming Subaru would launch a new coupe version of its Impreza with both RWD and AWD powertrains around the same time this is due.
The two new coupes are expected to be differentiated largely by price and performance. The new RWD is expected to be launched in late 2010 or early 2011 and will be priced from less than $20,000.
