I was trying to sign up for the Autox in Valleyfair as some of the local guys convinced me to do so. I have three questions for the regulars:
    1. What would be my car's classification?
I have UP, Turbo back, Accessport, KB SS, and some new HPS brake pads.

    2. My turboback is catless. Their website says that only street legal cars are allowed. Soooo, technically i am not street legal.. so i cannot sign up?

    3. I am kinda scared.. as i have never been to one. I will watch on saturday and probably participate on sunday (after Question 1 and 2 are answered). Do a lot of people over here participate? what to expect? Any pointers?

i would suggest starting in SI. you can run anything because its the beginner class. get some experience there and then move up.

    1. SM. Sorry, but it's a harsh class.. if you had your 3rd catalytic converter intact, you could switch the AP to an STX map and run there.

But as stated, since this is your first time, it's better to sign up in SI. it's an open class, but you can only stay there untill you win. then you have to move to your proper class.

    2. No, you can sign up. There are only a few classes that require a car to be "street legal" what that stipulation mainly means is that it's "street safe" i.e. battery tied down with a metal attachment, good wheel bearings, functioning brakes.. There will be plenty of cars that aren't really "street legal" any more.

    3. Don't be scared! there are a few of us on this board that run all the events localy. as for tips, pointers and what to expect, i direct you to this: http://www.tirerack.com/features/solo2/handbook.htm
it'll tell you everything you need to know about how an event works, and what you'll need to do to prepare.

Shane, thanks for all the info. I knew either Zach or you'll jump in and help me out.

Yeah I signed up in the SI class and will be running sunday. I will be there saturday as well but will just volunteer/watch/learn etc.

I will be running Saturday and Sunday battling it out with Shane (most likely getting smoked...). Come say hi and welcome to your new addiction that we call Autocross! Win that SI trophy and then get a cat on there and come play in STX!

Bicycle Bob and I typically convoy up if you're interested. We usually meet at Best Buy since he lives SW and I live NE. We are both signed up for both Saturday and Sunday. We haven't set a time yet but I will talk to him tomorrow night and post up here with a time if you're interested. Bob runs A-Stock in his Evo and I run STX but don't give Shane or MNBodyman much of a scare....we'll see what happens this season. If you want I have a set of magnetic "SI" letters that you can have.

I will see you guys there. Look for a bone stock steel gray Saab 9-3, likely in last place in G-Stock.

Anyone planning on driving out together? I am off of 100 and Minnetonka Blvd.

I was there today and parked next to a blue bugeye with mnsubaru sticker.

Spotted Chin, Shane, Zach, and some other STI's and WRX's. Even a Legacy Wagon.

For guys that are going tomorrow, found some things that might be helpful.

    1. Going early helps!!
    2. Track is pretty fast .. atleast looks fast from a viewer's perspective
    3. If you take a right after leaving Valley Fair, there is a burger king right on the same street.
    4. Shell on First Ave and Minnesota st. carries 91 Non-oxy. Same as burger king directions
    5. If you see me, please stop by and say hi. If you have any pointers/suggestions.. i'd love to hear em. I will be in a 02 PSM wrx with tinted headlight/tail lights. I think I am the only south asian in the club:)
    6. I am planning on getting there by 7:30. We can decide on a spot and have all the subies in the same spot.

Well, I ran a best time of 1:10.9. I decided I'm finally going to get suspension after today...it was pretty ridiculous. Pretty fast subarus out there, though. I talked to the guy with the yellow subaru with the older STi motor swap...good guy, sweet car.

Maybe I'll just have to show everyone up with the GL next time...hrmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...

Zach could probably help describe it. It's this multiplier that they use to help even the field out and make the times/places more in check. So if you are running a stock class they may multiply your time by .88 vs. if you are in a high horsepower modified class they may multiply your time by .93 (all examples) its the way for high tuned cars to compete against unmoddified stock cars.

    Am I close, Zach?

yeah, its a mathematical multiplier that adds a modifier per class. The lower the class the higher the modifier. It's based on results at the previous three years runs at nationals so its fairly accurate. Basicaly if you run in G stock your pax modifier is incredibly high, you can run say a 1:20 on a course where a A prepared car ran a 1:00 and still beat him in a pax score. PAX was invented to compare just drivers and take the car out of the equation, but general consensus is it still really doesn't do that as it cant account for a lot of factors.

PAX is also how the street tire index class works. Anyone in any class can enter it as long as they're using street tires (STS, STX, STU STS2 cannot enter as they are street tire only classes, the index calss was created for people who run in classes that allow R comps but for whatever reason dont want to use R comps) and the times are multiplied by the pax modifier for their particular class and whoever comes out lowest wins. Its a popular class since it allows people to be competitive in stock and mod classes without having to buy R compound tires which are expensive and need to be mounted and unmounted at each event.

The PAX modifier for STS was pretty good last year so i could occasionally get as high as 6th place in PAX however now that i'm in DMOD, i'm screwed. I'd have to be running close to FTD (fastest time of day) to win PAX now =[

I wasn't sure of the street tire index, thanks for explaining it. I noticed that all of the other GS cars had R compounds, etc. for little old me. Needless to say I still got owned by two Nissan SE-R's, LSD, lightweight, R compounds and good drivers make for formidiable competition.

    Yup, just like gloves.

They are ultra sticky with a bit of road noise. Totally worth the $105 IMO. But I am coming from stock ones :eek4:

Now it's time to lower it, thinking of progress/perrin springs. I am just not knowledgeable enough to get the Ground Control coilovers. .. oh well.

Btw, thanks Shane for suggesting t3h kooks.

NP man... But you gotta let me drive it for that... =)

Honestly, i'm thinking of switching to the kooks my self, and i want to feel how they are compared to the falkens. they come in a size thats way better suited for my car, that falken doesn't offer (despite dozens of emails).

as for the lowering, that sounds fine, but i'd replace your struts at the same time as you do the springs. KYB AGXs are a pretty good strut, but the big dawg is obviously the Koni. Doing it all at the same time will just make your life easier, and you'll be able to take better advantage of the new springs. a set of camber plates wouldn't be a bad idea either, but that's getting into bigger territory. some camber bolts will do you just fine all the way around.

#4 was fun. I got 3 cones at the same time during one of my runs. How did everyone else feel about it?

Has anyone run at DCTC before? How is the surface? I can't wait for longer and faster courses.
