My engine is dead!!

    My engine died today at DB.... I went in to get my tune checked by Shane and the initial run he did said it needed a decent amount of work done on the timing. So, I took off and wen to get something to eat and when I got back, Shane said something broke in the engine.

    I don't know the details as to how it failed, but I saw the dyno plot and it looked like around 3-4k rpms everything failed. He turned it over for me and the rest of the guys in the shop and it sounds like crap inside.

    So, my car is dead stranded at DB and I am looking for some options.... new engine, rebuild, used engine... I have no idea what the options are really. I was thinking that the easiest and quickest thing to do is probably find a used WRX engine and go that route. I need a lot of help on prices and options, so I am coming to you guys for help.

    What do I do know....?

    P.S. 02 WRX 2.0 - EVO3 16g with all the supporting stuff

    IT WASN'T DB's FAULT!!!!

    Don't throw DB under the bus for this. They just had my car at the wrong time. At least I hope that is what it was.

    Best junk yards to call around and ask for engines? Just searched NASIOC quick, nothing too exciting there.

    AAA auto salvage is pretty good, but chances on getting a good engine arent that "good" lol

    Do yo have any idea what was wrong? bearings, head issues?

    either way I'm very sorry and wish you the best!!

    without knowing what's wrong with the current set-up (focusing on heads) I suspect a hybrid build would be time consuming (few weeks) and could be costly. (I'm shopping and researching my own options for a build for my car)

    if it's not your DD then no worries. Otherwise if it is I think you should be able to find a used wrx motor cheap. call all the junk yards in the area

    How much is a short block from the dealer. I thought they were like 1500 bucks or something.

    Thanks for the info guys...

    To start out, what is going to be the best diagnostic procedure to figure out what is wrong with it. Shane turned it over for me and some of the guys in the shop and the thing sounded horrible. Something was inside "clanging" pretty good.

    I was thinking to start that I would pull the engine out of the car and possibly pull the heads off to get a better idea what is going on. But, should I run some diagnostics before I do that, or will I not find anything without tearing it apart.

    If tearing it apart is my only option, I was planning on dragging it to my parents house in Elk River and starting the engine removal tomorrow. I just got done putting a new clutch and flywheel in it two weeks ago so pulling the engine out is the next adventure to undertake.

    Diagnostics... where do I start? Also, would anyone be interested in coming out to Elk River sometime in the near future to give me an "expert" opinion. We will start out the bid at, free food and cold drinks of choice....

    By the way, this is my DD, but my parents can run one car for a while while I work on the beast, so I at least have that going for me. Also, I am uber interested in the sti short block if that is what is wrong. I just need to figure out what is wrong before I can really start investigating the "true" options.

    I buy the engine package that that guy is selling and then part out as much stuff as I can off my engine to get the price down. That way I could probably do the install myself, assuming this guys engine isn't torn apart in pieces, and the remove all my parts to sell them.

    Think about it.... assuming one half of engine is screwed.... if I sold everything that was replaced by that guy's package, 16g turbo and all the supporting mods, I could convert my engine unit to a practically brand new STI and walk away in the end spending how much...??????

    Even better... I swap my parts on to the sti engine, rock over 300awhp and have instant turbo response, and then sell all the stock sti and wrx parts. STI parts with only that many miles have to be worth a little.

    Sorry for all the posts, but I am just on the internet doing some mad searching tonight trying to get things moving on a fix ASAP.

    Ummm... Maybe you should use the bookmark option instead?

    As for your engine, unless you have built one before, I would not attempt it on your own.

    as i stated on the phone today your best bet is going to be just picking up a cheap used 2.0 shortblock or just getting an new sti shortblock from the dealer for pretty cheap and run the hybrid setup like i had.

    that is...if it is in fact your bottom end thats dead.

    Check the oil for metal.

    But really, if you hear a bad metal sound (and not Slayer), you are going to have to start tearing that thing apart. And either you do it or somebody else does it.

    The WRX shortblock I have has a looks to be failed rod bearing possibly. I had to CLEAN OUT the oil pan of ALL metal shavings with 4-5 bottles of brake cleaner and AIR HOSE to spray everything out.

    I have my '99 EJ22E block which I'll be building in the near future with a WRX crank and forged pistons/rods for a spare 2.2L. Should be plenty for holding E3-16G power.

    Take her apart. it's not that hard... hahahaha

    Well first, like others have noted, drain your oil and look for metal flakes. If there are flakes, that is a bearing of some sort(rod or main).

    If the oil has chunks, well then you "broke" something, rod/piston/sleeve/crank etc, could be anything.

    If there is anything at all in the oil, might as well drop the oil pan to take a closer look. Other then that, your probably pulling it and tearing it down. I'm guessing the cause of the noise will be pretty easy to spot.

    At this point, the damage is done, you could possibly have someone with some knowledge of things like this to listen and give suggestions to what it could be. But really in the end, your probably tearing it down anyway.. there is a nasty sound.. it has to be fixed..

    well i have a ej20g block that could work for you, not positive if you can mate the wrx heads to this, someone else might know for sure, but i would let that go for a couple hundred bucks. this might be a cheap way to go to get you by.

    Just got done draining the oil out of the car... not a single shaving in the oil. I am going to start the engine removal procedure now. No metal shavings in the oil.... what are the pros and cons of that?

    I don't see how you can pull the oil pan with the engine still in the car... impossible? I am assuming now that I need to pull the engine to do this.
