I've got the front skid plate on. It was a super easy install. Do you rally your car? I don't myself, I just have a lowered car and worry about hitting stuff.
Yep, the full 3/16" front and back. I would have done my own front and the Subaru back, but I just don't have the time. My WRX will be car 00 (the next to last course opening car) at Shooting Star in July. The car has run Advance 1 in the past at Headwaters, and I got really sick of dancing all over the road to avoid every last rock. Plus 00 runs a lot faster than A1. Car 0 (final opening car) will be Mayhem83, car 0 runs at about 8/10s of full speed. The thing is, his 8/10s often is faster than the rest of the field at 10/10s, so he has been known to "win" rallies that he was opening car for. And I have to stay ahead of him... :eek4: Good thing I get a substantial head start.
Hey Vector...where did you get that from? I found the site a while back, but can't seem to find it now...Do I have to take off the plate everytime I do an oil change?
http://www.get-primitive.com/ Yes, the skidplate must be dropped for an oil change. It's just 5 bolts, and it's a lot less hassle than replacing an engine after bashing in the oil sump. If you are looking for some protection, but you don't need the full-on rally armor, there are other vendors. http://www.rallyinnovations.com/ - Their stuff is mostly style oriented. Thoiugh their "skidplate" would be nice to protect the nose from curbs. http://rallyarmor.com/index.html - They make a 1/8" thick skidplate that's not nearly strong enough for rally use, but would probably be great for lowered cars, and a lot lighter.
http://www.fastlineonline.com/products.html#skidplate Here's the one that I have. 1/8" aluminum and has the exact same design as the primitive one but without the oil plug access hole. It also comes with some nice hardware to mount it. Like Vector said, 1/8" isn't enough for full rally usage, but is more than adequate for a lowered car to go play in the gravel with.
Thanks guys...I wonder if it would clear my GT headers though? Is there any mods I have to do to make this plate fit?
I'd pull off the stock plastic undertray and take a look. If the headers don't drop below any part of the subframe, you should be good to go. Basically these aluminum plates mount flush with the jack plate and aross the two subframe rails.
I notice there is a bulge on the plastic undertray...So that my Headers do not touch it...Since the skidplate it flat throughout, that is what I'm worried about...No biggie..Until I see one on a WRX/STi then maybe I'd consider it...
Its not for Sog' its for the people he meets in the dark alleys... they need teh protection from his anteater:biggrin:
^Dam right...Why do u think there's a hole on the skidplate, it wasn't there before, I just got to it first. Notice the size is just big enough for my #@!&*@&!$%! And that ain't just for the oil filter...hahaha
You could add a couple of washeres or a spacer between the skidplate and body mounts if the headers don't interfere with the skidplate too much. Or you could make a cutout where they interfere. Aluminum is easy to work. Or, if it's a 1/8" skidplate made of a soft aluminum like some, you could maybe just take a hammer and form a bulge to clear the headers.
