My first attept at raising these fishes....Silver Arowana. I got it to 20inch. It's growth sorta stumped because i couldn't get a bigger tank for it. here's a pic of it!

My newest one! it's about 4-5inches right now and is living in one of those plastic storage thingies(18g). Raising it in there until it reaches 10inchs before i transfer it to my 55g tank. here some pics!

Lue, from the way these fish are discribe... I don't know how you're going to manage it :D

    Here's my reason:

Silver Arowanas need the best of water conditions to ensure the best coloration and finnage. These are not beginner's fish! Ammonia and nitrites must be kept at zero, and the water must be clean and clear. The tank should also be huge to house such a fish and any tank smaller than a 55 gallon will stunt their growth, at full size an adult silver arowana should have a tank of 300 gallons.

Be sure to provide a variety of foods, as this is essential for the arowanas diet; arowanas are usually fed live fish such as guppies or goldfish, if at all possible grow the fish up on arowana sticks. Often when you purchase arowana from the store they will have been fed guppies and it is quite difficult to wean them off! To supplement instead of live fish you can try beef heart which has the nutrients but lacks the diseases which are so rife in feeders. A nutritious, complete diet will enhance their colors and ensure good health, you should also note that they will eat almost any fish they can fit in their mouth!

These fish are excellent jumpers so make sure the top of the aquarium is covered. The Arowana or Silver Arowana will prefer an aquarium with a fine gravel bottom planted loosely with hardy plants and open areas on the top to swim.

*Good luck... and if you decided you can't keep it anymore... please, please do not release it in the wild. That's how we ended up with other species of fish that is harming the very same lakes and rivers we fish from.

LOL like Vic posted, that is all true. My freinds fish jumped out of the tank all the time. That is ultimiately how he died, he jumped while my freind was at work.

Cool, though I should warn you tank size has nothing to do with the size they will grow, but they are cool fish for sure.

Vic, impressive fish knowledge, all the years I spent working at a tropical fish store I could've have said what you said better.

Cool enough but you realy want 75+ gal for that guy...
I hardly know anything about them. If I want to know fish stuff I ask my bro with the coral farm. Still in production at his place. When he gets it fully going I can see about him cutting deals for people that want coral.

Nick, LOL... honestly, I have no knowledge in tropical fish. I took the fine words from a google search on these fish.

The only fish I'm familiar with is the Betta and could barely keep my own betta afloat hehehe.

Matt: sure tell me about it when you can. I dont know of anyone else who raises these fishes.

no worries guys, i'm not new to these fishes. I've raised them for 3yrs now so i know what i'm doing. If me saying my first attempt up there is making you think that i am new to it. Sorry for the misunderstanding, I meant that was the result of my first attempt 3yrs ago. this is my 4th one from the past years. the first one(big one) died because we were renovating the house and he died from stress, 2nd one the heater died and water got too cold and it died. 3rd one my dad threw a whoel bunch of fish into my tank causing disease to it.....all of them grew to almost 10 inches before they died besides the first one which exceeded 20inch.

Btw some of the info is false. Feeding live fish to an arowana can be bad for it's health. It causes a disease called dropped eye. Naturally arowana's eat bugs and wat ever fits there mouth that's ON the surface. They will jump up to 2ft to catch their preys. Feeding live fish will cause them to have drop eye meaning their eyes will face down always and it's hard for them to feed on the surface again. They will eat pellets and bugs with no prob. Pellets are much better too since it provides more nutrients for them. Every petstore that sells them here feeds them pellets or worms or any insect, NOT fish. As of now, it's still new so im' starving it for a few days so i can get it to eat pellets, once it starts to eat pellets i will feed it krill(enhance color), crickets, pellets and more to give it a better diet.

Yes I would need to provide a bigger tank, i'm planning to build a pond in my back yard to keep it in once it exceeds 24inch. I just simply love raising these fish so i always get them when ever i can. They are only aviable twice a year, once during the winter and once during the summer.

Vic: hey i love this fish! i'm keeping it til it dies! so no worries on me releasing it. they are also easier to maintain then it looks.

Grimm: bettas like it better in small places. If put it in anything bigger than 2.5gallons it will just sit on top of the corner and not show any coloration unless you got a really agressive one.

I know a little. My coffee cup is bigger than the cell that he has for each beta, I would be hoping that he would have 12 oz to a pint....
I let my brother grow everything, and we have 500 gal going right now (that includes the sump skimmer section) of salt water tanks... within 2 months we should be over 1.5k gal of salt water tanks. I know more the equitment side. Skimmer design, pump placement, cooling systems, heating systems, auto calcifiers, RO system etc. I let my brother deal with the relative depth, and who grows with who the best.

    Right now we have,
    Turbo snails
    Concs
    Zoanths (Red Blue)
    Hammers
    Few differnt shrooms
I cant find any good overview pictures right now.

That tank is finaly coming down because of the move. That one was up 2 years straight. So we can get a few thousand gal going for a coral farm. We want to sell grown coral instead of coral ripped out of the ocean....
Once we get more up I will take more pictures. It should be intresting. The new skimer is almost as big as I am... :p

Wow your salt tank sounds awesome grimm I used to have a pretty ncie salt tank, a 110 wet/dry, and all the accesories. It was a lot of work, but super cool, I never got into the corals much, but my brother has/had some kickass stuff in his tanks, now I think he's just running a 2.5gal mini reef that's pretty **** cool. :D Too much$ for me now to get back into, but I think I still have my wet dry system, unless my brother broke it or something.

you are just asking for it to die in a 5 gal. What size sump... I guess if you had a 20-30 gal sump you could still do it in a 5.

Well you actualy could have done it with a 5 gal display section if you had enough sump/filtration for evaporation and temp regulation. Don't think I am getting down on you because I am not. If you ever want advice...... ask my brother :D

actually, it didnt die on me because of poor filtration/sumption(what's that? LoL sorry didnt ask earlier). I ran out of money to get the sea salt mixture. I actually straight up bought those "ready to go salt water" and just pour it into my tank. I came home one day with the kids all over the tank and it was really dirty. I also ran out of em salt water so i couldn't change the water nor did i have money to buy more.....bad first experience but will ask your brother for advice when i want to try again. If i do another one it will be with my 55g tank.

The sump tank is the tank after your proten skimer, and filter. For salt water tanks you don't suck the water out usualy, you have an overflow box that alows the top few inchs drain. The more water in a system the less suceptable to vaporization of water leaving a system that is too salty. The sumps are ususaly designed to be trickling bio filters too.

For the 75 gal we had a 25 gal sump, but I had him set it up to auto fill with RO water to keep salinity fairly constant.

Once we added another 75 to that system we were trying some bio filtration (Live rock) along with skiming, and filtering. To do this we had a rack of 25 gal tanks.
Eventualy in there was a lawnmower bleany and a few other little guys, more snails etc.

For the buisness set up we are not using any gravel and have 2 100 gal sumps :p. I will post a few pictures in a few months after we get a set going.
