well check engine light came on, speedometer stopped working and ive cleared the code which was a p0500 and p1540
but i havent driven it since, so im hoping it works again, but in case it doesnt work, i figure it needs a vehicle speed sensor.. thoughts?

every-other day my speedometer doesn't work,
this sounds funny, but I hit the top of the dash really hard, and it works. lol.
    true story.

I got same problem on my 96 L.. I havent dealt with it yet so i guess i dont got much input but i also got a camshaft position sensor out so thats first on the fix list..

Mine stopped wroking in my old 95 L and it turned out to be the drive had finally decided to depart from the back of the speedo just enough to allow the square peg to slip.
A quick push, light clamp with some pliers and some epoxy to make sure it never did it again and it was fixed. I think there is also a wire that can drop out / become resistive and have pretty much the same thing happen.

well picked up a new vehicle speed sensor from subaru today, it appears that its a short stump with 2 wires coming from it that attaches directly to the transmission, so nothing in the cluster...
crossing my fingers and i hope it works.. i will let you know shortly

*edit* just drove it around the block and it seems to be working properly again, unfortunately the 98+ with the newer dash has an electronic sensor on the transmission and not behind the speedometer, i had to jack up the car to get under it to get easier access to it, i wish i had a stubby 17mm wrench!
