okay, got the 2.5l block, now what? :eek4:...

I need to have this block inspected before I start throwing parts at it.

I know I'm replacing pistons, either CP coated or Cobb. However, I know crap about bore size, what should be used, what shouldn't.

probably replacing connecting rods with new stockers, new bearings, etc...

I'm a total newb on the motor build and have made myself dizzy with all the information on nabisco.

I just need this thing to safely hold 450 awhp max. (not that I assume I'll ever get that much, but we're in the ballpark)

So, who do you guys recommend to inspect the block?

:lollol: Get lost punk, you can't even handle the car you have. Besides, you have a fancy new 2.0l block. the fact that you are STILL running around with a meger td-04 is upsetting

why not get some different rods & bearings while the motor is out?

I'd stick to the stock 99.5

IDK...I'm still learning. ACL Race bearings have good reviews, that I do know. Are aftermarket connecting rods needed for my power goals?

I agree I do want to stick with stock bore if possible

I PM'd Matt, hopefully he can help. he offered a few months ago when I approached him, but I know he's super busy so I don't know if he can squeeze me in.

Definately get your block inspected. You may want to alittle bigger in piston size. .25 or so. That way you get the best piston seal without piston slap. I had buddies that didn't and they have massive piston slap. (hondas) Then I have a cousin that got .25 over and that motor ran smooth and problem/slap free.

You should really think about getting, for sure, aftermarket rods and new bearings, like Nuke said.

Probably not. The stock rods are forged and plenty of people are running the stockers at higher power levels.

From my research... The stock STI rods and crank are just fine for making good horse power. But still doesnt mean you can add the money to upgrade them.

For me i'm going with stock rods, stock crank, mahle pistons, and acl or cosworth bearings

yea stock rods can handle a good amount of power id say about 500 - 550 safe. pistons are something you definitely want to upgrade, for all my motor builds i have always gone with cp pistons with no problems. you yourself can do a visual inspection of the exterior, keep and eye out for major cracks, broken ears... ect. take a look at the cylinder walls and see if there is any scoring. if there is run you finger nail over it and see if the scores are deep enough to catch your nail. if they are you would need an overbore if not you can stick with stock bore. stock bore is 99.5, you can upgrade to 100 or 100.5 if necessary.

are you flowing the 2.0 heads on there? if you are, there is an extra crankcase vent you will need to plug near the water manifold. you need the sti oil pump also, and inside the oil pump there is, in this order - spring - washer - piston. you want to get another washer that same size and double it up.

there is more that you need to get, i can help as you go along. good luck to ya.

LOL..it's going to take time for me to gt this together. And I'll probably run my current 16g on the block until I can afford to go crazy with the turbo, injection, and IC. Even so I'm confident the 16g will pull some nice numbers with a 2.5l.

I read the MOSC thread about his 16g sti and I have no IC issues like he experienced so I'll continue to run 20+ psi and have a torquey little car until the big turbo is installed.

thx a ton for the advise. Yup, there will be 2.0l heads on there. The block has the oil pump already.

If you aren't running AVCS or oil squirters, I don't see why you need a higher volume pump, but it wouldn't hurt. As far as shimming it for more pressure, is that really necessary? On a 10mm pump on my 22T, it maintains plenty of oil pressure. The squirters kick in at about 62psi, and the pressure creeps up from there. Is 40psi on a hot idle really needed? If you are worried about it, you can just use the 11mm pump from the newer dual AVCS cars.

For bearings you should really call Calico. They use ACL's and Clevite's as bases and is the company that Cobb gets their bearings from. The coating can save your crank if anything happens, granted you catch it soon enough. Plus, its about the same price.

Well a 1/4 inch overbore will cause HUGE problems.

But if he was talking about .020 over, that's pretty common.

If its a used block I bet the cylinder wall has a slightly larger diameter towards the head side. If you dont need to go the .020 overbore, I have some new weisco 99.5mm pistons for sale :)

I third that, he built my motor haven't had any problems and I drive it to its potencial:woot: and if your going for 450awhp if you put stock rods in it plan on pulling that thing apart when the stockers snap off, spend the money now and get some Pauter, or Oliver rods.
