I Have a 2003 sub wrx 2.0 Hear is the problem! the car idles pefect and drives fine as long as you dont accelerate to fast, you have to ease into the gas. but if you try to step on it it falls on its face , jerkes violently, acts like it is hitting the revlimiter. it will rev normaly in netral but under a load is when it does this. Any help would be much appriciaited my shop is in the mankato MN area if you are in the area and can come over and help fix it you will be rewarded. or we can drive it. Thanks for any help you may be able to give!
How many miles on the car? what mods are done? Anything recent? Have you changed the fuel filter recently? Have you changed your Intercooler hoses or had them off recently? Are all connections tight? Have you changed your spark plugs recently? Be as specific as possible and we should be able to help you out!!
Try getting on the freeway, give yourself some space, shift into 5th and stand o the gas. make sure you build boost and everything, and watch to see if the tach jumps. It kind of sounds like slipping clutch.. IMHO
it's probably your spark plugs. we had the same problem with asiandude on this forum's wrx swap RS. His car would idle normal, drive normal, but if you gas it, it bucks and hesitates like it's bouncing off the rev limiter. Also look at your boost guage if you have any. If you gas it hard and you get boost limiter, it'll cause the boucing off rev limiter thing. If you gas it but not enough to hit full boost, it'll go all the way to redline. If it does this, i say it's the spark plugs.
i just put new plugs in it, new clutch, all the turbo connections are tight. Would a bad coil cause the problem ? as for mods i dont think it has any but it does have an avc-r turbo timer as for being installed right and working properly i have no idea because the car came to me in this awful state of disrepair i tryed to hook every thin back to factory but had the same result so it realy makes this a pain in the butt. so the problem could be just about any thing
Is the check engine light coming on? If so, get the codes, that could help narrow it down. In my opinion, it sounds like a fuel problem, like your fuel system can't keep up under load. I'd check over the fuel related items and then see if you can monitor the fuel presure somehow while reproducing the problem. Joel
Maybe a sensor is going out: something like the MAF sensor. That thing can cause major drivability issues when it dies.
Crack in the air intake piping. my buddy's old mx6 had that and when he would get on it, chug, chug, because the motor would twist a little to split the crack open far enough top pull in more air then was needed most MAF sensor, but drive it nice or put some duct tape around it and sealed that crack, ran like a top...
Well, you said it is load based, and you just changed plugs. i would try to find another set of coilpacks and start swapping them out 1 at a time. usually when it is load based it is either fuel or spark. If your fuel pressure is ok, I would go with spark. Russ
Doubt thats the problem. If it was the MAF sensor itself the car wouldn't idle or drive well at all in any condition/load.
hmmmm... this sounds exactly like my occasional problem ive been having with my EJ22T. Somewhere between gapping my plugs down more and checking every vac line i could get my hands on i managed to clear it up. Though it comes back now and again, only when i give it WOT pre-boost though. If i let it spool to ~5 and then go WOT it goes fine, but if not it misses like mad. I can hear it backfirring in the header like its running extra rich. Im thinking its a leak somewhere on the intake side of the turbo post-MAF but havent been able to track it down yet. T-bolts on my high pressure side seemed to help a bit also. I dunno if this helps you but best of luck, perhaps our problems are similar. Ill let you know if i figure anything more out
boost leak... i also drove an mx6 turbo that had a cracked tb boot... it would drive normal but under boost it would jump sputter
