I am currently at cobb stg. 2 and have a 4EAT.
Although the car feels very stable I would like to have more power.
I am wondering what turbo setup and supporting mods would I be happy with for a while. I am looking down the cobb path and although stg 2.5 seems safe and easy I feel that I will get bored pretty quick. I noticed a guy on clubwrx with a APS SR30 with pretty good numbers and just wondering if that is a good setup or if there is something else out there that would be fun. Looking for something with good spool up but still able to produce some mid to top end power.
BTW I am also going to do the TC (protorque) and valvebody (IPT) along with suspension. Know of any good tranny shops for the 4EAT.

Just talked to DB performance also and they said they can Protune, anyone have experience with them?

There is a lot of power to be had with the EJ20, but you'll lose out on low end grunt. Getting a bigger turbo will require bigger fuel injectors, fuel pump, intercooler, and a new tune. Maybe you can buy some of Imprezme02's (a member here) stuff if he converts back to stock.

I personally don't know anyone who has tuned with DB Performance. They promise to be good to your car if they tune it even though they don't have that much experience on the Cobb Accessport. They have a good background tuning other cars so I don't think they'll mess up with yours.

You should go for a ride in either my car or WRXEcho's car. We both have modified 4EATS with two different turbos. I have the 18g and he has the 20g I believe. We both have the TC and VB done too. You would be able to get a very good idea of what the two different power levels are with the 2.0. These are the best turbos for the 4eat in my opinion. I should have my car back in my hands and running this weekend. Let me know if you would like to go for a ride and I would be more than willing to take you out. As for getting your tranny worked on I believe Bikerboy would be willing to do it. He even has a spare VB and TC so you wouldn't even lose down time with your car.

That would be awesome if I could take a ride in your car and see what it feels like. I will be down on the midway this weekend if you wanna meet up. Also I would be seriously interested in the TC and VB. Just wondering what turbo and EM you are running. Thanks

Well, you will have to remeber that once you do the tc mod, you can run a larger turbo than what you would think. I am running a 18g with my 4eat, and sometimes I wish I would have gone with the 20g. The tc will flash up to about 3500+, so as long as you get a turbo that will get you full boost around that range, you will be good to go. At the very least I would go with the 18g. The auto tranny will work the motor very different than the 5 speed, so you will be able to get away with a larger turbo and not really have to worry about lag to much. The only time I really have any lag, is when you floor it at less than 10mph (or from a stand still), but it only rolls out a bit and it will take off like a shot.

yeah...thats pretty fun to do to people. Step on it off a light and be like "hold on.....there we go...WEEEEEEEE!!!" I will for sure take you for a ride when I get my car back this weekend. Its sittin out at my buddys place broken down right now, too lazy to drive and unplug the sensor so I can drive it back. I am going back there on friday night however so saturday I will take you for a ride but that would be the earliest I would be able to.

Oh yeah, im running the DB TD05-18G with a protune from jeorge on my AP.

by saying it flashes to about 3500+ rpms do you mean the time it takes once you step on the gas is reduced to get the rpms up high vs. the slower time with the stock TC and also I notice that MNautomatic has the DB 18G, what injectors, intercooler fuel pump should I look at. I am basically just trying to cost this project out so I can go get some $$ for it. Thanks for all the help, I need to get this car rollin before summer is over.

"flash" means that the tack sorta jumps to about 3500 and holds it until you pass it I believe but I could be wrong. As for injectors, I have modified stockers from WRX1, MRT TMIC intercooler, Walrbo Fuel Pump. Be ready to go all the way when you do the turbo, there a quite a few little things you need to make sure you have so everything can run seamlessly.

what size injectors would this call for? any suggestions on brand? I read on the forum people saying to stay away from the PE injectors. Anything cost effective.

if you are looking to be the most cost effective then I would suggest trying to get some modified stockers. WRX1 got mine to flow somewhere around 600 I think but I can't really remember off the top of my head.

it seems from reading around that most people are recommending the 18g. Some say you can get away with the super 16g though and save money but I would rather not have to try and squeeze every ounce of power out of a smaller turbo. Does that seem logical?? If anyone sees any good deals on the 18g let me know cause I am ready to buy.

I would even consider the 20g. From what I saw at the dyno day, the 20g and 18g spool about the same on the auto, so you will just be enjoying the extra power. I am running 630cc injectors with my 18g, and my idc's at 22psi was about 90-91. Sooner or later I will actually get around to tuning my car again with the ap, and I think I am going to run a little less boost, but be a little more aggressive with the afr. As for the super16g, I would go with something bigger. Where the s16g comes in good is on a 5 speed, with the 4eat and the tc mod, you will never see the increased spooltime the 16g will get ya.

wow that tc seems to make the 4eat all that much better to have. I assume I will need a bigger top mount too. Is there a good top mount to run, I can get a discount on APS and Perrin stuff. Sorry to have so many questions but I am also curious to know if there is a map I can load into my AP or do I need a custom tune.

Yes...along with the turbo upgrade you should upgrade the TMIC. If you dont increase the intercooler in size you will run into heat issues as well as it limiting the amount of power you can put down. There was an 18g for sale somewhere in the classifieds here but I would suggest looking on nasioc. Used ones are always popping up everywhere. I would take the 20g into consideration as well. Ask WRXEcho if you can go for a ride and see what his car feels like and I will also take you for a ride. You should get a custom tune too when upgrading your car this much. You can get a predone map but it wont get you near the power you could be making.

The guy from Deadbolt is saying that I will probably need 750 cc injectors and also an aftermarket uppipe. Would my gutted stock uppipe work fine. I would hate to have to swap that out it fits so perfect.

Nope, the gutted stock one will work. As for the injectors, I am running 22psi with my 18g and on 630cc injectors my idc's are right around 90-91%. 750cc injectors would drop you way down to the mid to low 80's. I guess it really depends on what kinda of tune you are looking for. if you want to run crazy amounts of boost, you will need more gas. Alot of it will also have to do with what your car will allow you to run.

This place is selling the 18G for $995 shipped and 20G $1050 shipped. Guy says this is the last day of sale but we will see.

looks like imprezme02 is prob gonna sell me his DB 18G and his APS TMIC. Is it possible to get a premade map for my AP so that I can at least have some fun with it until I get it tuned or is it safer to just wait.

Yes you can but I would guess your taking a pretty big risk. I would say get it installed sometime around a tuning day and get it tuned there. If you are really ancy or dont get it around a tuning day, I would ask WRX1 if he would be willing to give you a little road tuning for some money.

Yeah...if you can swing it, get in on the PDX tuning day. Always nice to have someone tune your car that really knows whats going on with it.

any recommendations on what are the best fuel injectors to run...I was reading on some posts and have heard that some will give you a rough idle.

Well, since you are running a ap, you will be able to run most injectors without problems. When you start running pe injectors with a utec, you will run into some idle issues. I guess it really depends on what kinda of power you really want. See if you can source another set of stockers and have them modded and cleaned.

I got some stockers sittin in my garage. If you can find someone to mod them I will dig around the garage a little bit and bring em down to firestone for you.

Well, I can mod them. I have done 15-20 sets now. I also have a very good place to send them to be sonic cleaned and flow tested. Just let me know what you want to do.
