I really am hoping somebody on hear can help me out with some JDM 2.0 questions. I am now on my 5th 2.5 short block, yes i said fifth!!! I am so tired of this car i could puke. Ive thought about just parting the car out and starting with something else but ive realized i really enjoy this car when its working. So i guess ill try again. I am going to start with a complete different engine and would like to know some info on the JDM ones. I really dont want to try wireing in the AVCS and buying a different EMS. So that takes care of the V7 or V8 engines. So this leads me to my first question. Does the V5 or V6 have the AVCS? And if they dont is this a complete plug and play engine? It sounds like the V7 and V8 are very well built with strong pistons and rods. Is this the case with V5/6? I guess any info on these engines would be very helpfull to me. Ok, I guess I'll be the first to ask. What is happening/what are you doing that you've gone though 5 freaking engines?
What Ryan said. If you are grenading that many 2.5 shortblocks, something else is wrong. What are your mods?
Im going back to a 2.0 and changing some other little stuff as of right now. Nobody can figure out what the problem is. Each and every short block has spun a rod bearing. Ive gone through three brand new sti short blocks with new oil pump, oil pan, pick up, and baffle. I also removed the stock oil cooler. The other two were built short blocks with very competent people building them. Ive had my heads checked over by Headwerks twice now and each time they come back fine. Ive also had my turbo completely disassembled to check for any bearing debris. Not one of these short blocks have lasted much over 1000 miles! As far as mods go if you really need to know look in my profile and my mod list is under my subie pic.
I really don't like the looks of that oil pickup. I wouldn't run it myself. Also, was the oil pump ever checked for burs that the 11mm pump has had in the past? Does the car have an oil cooler? If so, what kind of core does it have? There are several out that I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole.
Hey Piddster, thanks for try'n to help get to the bottom of this. Oil pick up was new just to the last engine. The other four had only stock pick ups. Also that 11mm was a new oil pump. Every engine had a new oil pump install. Just this last one i upgraded it to the 11mm. As far as the oil cooler goes i havent had it on any of my blocks expect the first one. The first place that built my block said not to reuse it and that they are pretty much pointless anyway.
Ive talked to Outfrontmotorsports today and i guess we are going to work out a deal to build and 2.1 stroker. After i get that engine in i may try a little something different with the tuning end. Hope this is the last time!
No prob. I only suggest the oil pickup because the inlet is smaller than the actual tube, which is a huge no-no in the fluid conveyance world. Oil coolers are not pointless. Some have much better core designs than others. Than can be cleaned by a tranny shop if they are full of metal bits.
I just wanna know where you find all these replacement motors! My 2.5 just blew and I need a new motor
What are you running for break in fluids? I recall someone posting a thread awhile ago about tearing up 2.2l blocks, and the rough consensus was due to the oil/fuel combo.
Odd. Nobody else is killing engines like this. It's either driver caused, builder caused, or your car is possessed. How do you treat your vehicle? Are you, perhaps, a bit hard on it?
Not to hijack the thread but he mentioned OutFrontMotorSports. They have working JDM LongBlock cores for $1000-$2000. "These engines come complete with injectors, OE fuel rails, OE fuel regulator, coil with plug wires, power steering pump, alternator, intake manifold, throttle body, and usually a belt."
Well they are really easy to find. Three of them were just new oem short blocks. Just find the subaru dealer with the best deal on them. The other two were built for me. Outfront was the last place i got one and are very nice to deal with.
Rotella T 15/40 was in this last engine and the others were just a straight non synthetic valvoline 10/40. None of them ever made it to the point where id switch over to a synthetic. Fuel use is always bp 93
Its definitely is not driver caused because im very critical when it comes to breaking in my car or any of my stuff. Heck this last one started knocking while just driving down the road on my way to work. During break in i always disconnect my boost controller and just run right off my actuator (11psi). Every engine is also primed for oil pressure before starting as well.
Where were the failure points in the past 5 motors? Bearings, I'm assuming? Have you been using the same person to do the tuning each time?
Yes rod bearings everytime. And yes same person is doing the tuning as well. Could it even be possible that the tune would cause this problem?
Uh, yeah. A crappy tune will destroy lower end bearings in no time due to excessive detonation, especially if the knock correction isn't setup correctly or your knock sensor isn't working.
Also, too conservative of timing is tough on rod bearings. If the ignition is way late, the rod is at much more of an angle when the force hits. It is similar to running race gas on a pump gas tune.

Yup AEM doesn't use a KC table like the stock ecu, just a timing table. You can have it add fuel when it detects knock, hehe Yup
