I just had Nathan (wrxboy2003) build a new catback exhaust for my car tonight. Previously I had a wrx axleback on the stock midpipe. Some of the welds were starting to rust and leak, so I decided to get something nice.

So, the catback has 2.25 pipe, an 18 inch resonator and a polished dual-tip magnaflow muffler. When Nathan got it all welded up and he started the car, I think we were both a bit shocked about how quiet it was. It has a really deep tone to it, but when you stand behind and have someone rev it up, it doesn't sound any louder than the wrx muffler, just a whole lot deeper.

It's definately louder inside the car, and I think it gets louder at WOT. I'm still getting used to it. I'm still a little worried about how loud it is when I'm driving, I hope the neighbors don't get upset. By the time I got home it sounded a bit louder at idle, but not bad.

Thanks Nathan for doing a great job on the exhaust. Here are some pics.

He does great work. And he is a great guy to chat with while he works. He has quite a few "work in progress" toys over in the corner of the shop, couple bikes, an rx7, etc., hopefully you got to check them out while you were there.

Once I figure out what I am doing with my car I will be making another visit to see Nathan.

Yeah, it's definately quieter than yours.

When I took this pic, I said something to Nathan like, "If I were Fuji, we'd be done right now..."

I wonder how it sounds. :)

I hope the glasspack wasn't installed with the "grooves" facing the oncoming exhaust flow. When looking at the picture, exhaust gasses should be blowing towards your eyes not through the pipe to the other side.

any pics of it not on the lift from a walk by point of view, I am going to have nathan do an exhaust system for me here in the near future, just curious how that looks standing behind it on the ground not 5 feet in the air..

I don't have any pics of it from the ground level yet, but I can take some and post them. It's really well lined up, pretty much perfectly aligned in the space on the bumper skin. I didn't want something that stands out too much and I think the dual tip looks perfect.

The groves ARE facing the direction the air is flowing, that's how it's going to quiet it. Ya, some restriction slightly...but it's a muffler system....haha It's better than a Glasspack though.

yes not much point having things inside to catch the resonating waves then facing them the other way so they defeat the purpose of why you bought it...

so FOng.. yes the grooves are facing oncoming exhaust traffic... that IS what reduces the resonating waves and exhaust noise... wink wink... same way I did with mine and the other 2 I have done... NO PROBLEMS....

The only issue with it is that turbulence is increased and will affect the scavenging-effect in a slightly negative way. This is just a power issue I'm concerned about; it will contain more of the noise that's for sure.

I've always thought that "cherry bomb" resonators have a perfectly straight-through design but with many small holes in the tube so the sound waves get trapped into them but the exhaust gas won't.

Here's a street level shot and a comparison with a wrx muffler.

ok then if it robs power then why did my custom made exhaust turbo back make exactly what Cobb says their stage 2 does... even with the 'power robbing' that you speak of???? I think you have theory and practicality mixed!?!?

and it isnt a "cherry bomb" it looks similar but it is just really a smaller muffler called a RESONATOR!!! removes the resonation and muffles volume a little...........

i havet clicked the link yet.

anyway in response to fong. in order for a scavenging efect to work the headers would have to be perfectly made for the car. so i w. stock parts i dotn think any scavengin is happening. so some fins wont hurt
