Guys we are gonna have to switch the domain name in order for things to run smoothly. I have decided to get all of your opinions on this topic. Lets hear em.

I would prefer to leave it like www.mnsubaruclub.com or www.mnsubie.com so we can still be the "minnesota subaru club"...and not like for example i-club.com..get my drift.

    Speak up!

    Why a domain name change?

Will the old domain name forward to the new one?

There would be some down time(dont know how long) if we wanted to transfer the domain to the new host. Yes there will be redirects in place so you could go to either. If we wanted we could wait for the transfer to happen..but WHO knows how long that could take...meaning the site would be down for days. My advice is to be up and running with both names and merge to one after everything is fine. We dont want to make this to big of a change...just get a newer and quicker running site.

ok ok... I'm going to explain this.

this is an ADDITIONAL domain name. The main reason we need this is for our development to continue... We get a free domain name as part of the hosting plan.

So what we were going to do is develop on this new one until all the links work and we are happy. At which point we will migrate the current database to the new forum software and point www.mnsubaru.com to the new website. There will be MINIMAL downtime. We are talking 2 hours TOPS.

CLIFFS: This is an ADDITIONAL domain name, nothing will change. You can keep typing in www.mnsubaru.com( oh and Im gonna make http://mnsubaru.com work too ;) ) and there will be NO problems.

    In conclusion: NOTHING CHANGES!

Sounds good and thanks for explaining it. Two hour down time is > than two day down time! :D

I know a lot of us are looking forward to the new site!

^ Hooray for that! I lost count of the number of times I've screamed "Dammit, the server's down again?! Oh, that's right, the 'www.' isn't optional! Grr". My neighbors thank you too ;)

My vote would be "MinnSubaru.com" or "MinnesotaSubaru.com" over the other choices, though. "emm enn subaru dot com" is hard to understand when shouted across lanes doing 30mph (as evidenced by the guy with the white '99 RS not being signed up yet)

I'd avoid "Subie" or "Suby" in the domain name until we agree on which one is correct, and THAT ain't gonna happen (heck, I use them both arbitrarily myself)

****, I wish you had posted sooner.. those are good points. Maybe we will have to break down and pay the 7.95 and get another one eventually.

For anyone interested: www.mnsubaruclub.com is the dev site. Changes are made daily/hourly. Suggestions are welcome. Note that the forum functions correctly, however anything posted will be deleted when we make the final switch. The username/password you use here should work.

FYI the server is currently set up to accept host header mnsubaru.com . The problem is the domain name is pointing to the wrong IP address, but the www alias IS set up correctly (this is why the www.mnsubaru.com works, but not mnsubaru.com) I don't have access to modify the domain name. :-p

Also, you don't have to register a new domain name if you're going to get control over the existing mnsubaru.com . Just set up a different alias such as dev.mnsubaru.com or something if you want two separate sites for a while. Seems like a lot of work to create a new domain name just for temporary use.

    It came free:roll:

Plus, we don't have control over mnsubaru yet, hopefully acquire that this weekend.
