http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601102&sid=aizloDFbRPRM&refer=uk Vatican Lists Seven Social Sins, Including Drug Abuse (Update2) By Flavia Krause-Jackson March 10 (Bloomberg) -- The Vatican has put together a list of seven ``social'' sins that includes excessive wealth, drug abuse, littering, genetic tampering and creating poverty. Echoing the concept of the seven cardinal vices -- set to paper by Pope Gregory I in the sixth century -- the new list adds a social dimension, Bishop Gianfranco Girotti, head of the Apostolic Penitentiary, said in an interview yesterday with the Vatican's official newspaper l'Osservatore Romano. ``You offend God not only by stealing, taking the Lord's name in vain or coveting your neighbor's wife, but also by wrecking the environment, carrying out morally debatable experiments that manipulate DNA or harm embryos,'' said Girotti, who is responsible for the body that oversees confessions. Pope Benedict XVI has spoken out on social issues throughout his three-year papacy. He backs a current political initiative to outlaw abortions after 90 days and encouraged Catholics to abstain from a 2005 referendum on easing restrictive laws on fertility treatments, which failed to achieve the 50 percent participation level to make the vote to change the law binding. The seven social sins are: 1. ``Bioethical' violations such as birth control 2. ``Morally dubious'' experiments such as stem cell research 3. Drug abuse 4. Polluting the environment 5. Contributing to widening divide between rich and poor 6. Excessive wealth 7. Creating poverty The original deadly sins: 1. Pride 2. Envy 3. Gluttony 4. Lust 5. Anger 6. Greed 7. Catholics are and always will be completely out of touch. It's a perversion of Christianity. And they still think that a bunch of old crusty men, holed up in a tiny, old Rome style city in Europe, have some sort of relevance to the real world. Hate to break it to you, but birth control is a GOOD thing. Because if you sit there and tell me that we should trust every sexually able person on this earth to be capable of raising a child properly, or trust them with 'abstinance', you are freakin' ignorant and naive. I laugh at the missionaries that go to African nations that are just teeming with AIDS infections and tell them that if they don't have sex, they wont get AIDS. Yeah, no kidding, but telling them that your flavor of boogeyman in the sky thinks it is bad to have sex isn't going to stop them from having sex. Give them some freakin' condoms for God's sake. I wont discuss abortion because that is a touchy subject. To each their own on that one I guess.
I posted to discuss. I think Catholics are getting bored...or something.. I don't know, but when my mom told me birth control is a sin I asked her if she would like me to get pregnant. End of story there.
Was it one of the really long ceremony's? I had a friend that had a catholic wedding and it was well over 2 hours.
I dont understand how they can trust one guy(the Pope) or even a handful to tell billions of people what is right or wrong. Putting faith in an unseen God in the sky is one thing, but faith in a human being with flaws is alot harder to except for me. I am not catholic but consider myself Christian.
if every sperm is sacred, then I've wiped entire sacred civilizations off of my chest, with an old gray gym sock. Sacred...haha. Oh I forgot, touching yourself is bad too
If you ingest them all back to be processed in your body again, is that still a sin? ...Just curious...
The second Catholics decided that their way was the only way to the Christian Heaven was the very second that they ceased to be Christians and became Catholicism. You can be Catholic all you want, but if you think that Catholicism is Christianity, you are wrong. It is a fringe version of it, but they have their own batshiat crazy rules on how it works, which makes it not the same.
My Catholic friends had a wonderful wedding in Madison that lasted 30 minutes. It can be done: We have the technology.
This. But I'll take it a step forward and get into abortion. Long story short, if someone is going to be for or against something to do with the womb and child birth... They get to be against birth control OR abortion and they only get to choose one. The moment they try to say some crap about how both are a sin, they need to get the **** out of dodge.
I am catholic but not all catholics are like that, or like what the pope says or wants to be. There are old style catholics and new style. Here in the U.S. majority of catholics are new type which not all set in there ways and such. You can still find older style churchs that have very long mass's and such. Its a stereotype but its not that catholics dont deserve that stereotype. But just remember that it is one. I know more catholics that laughed at what the pope had said and I dont know a single one that agreed with it. So I really dont know what the pope is saying, I think he might be removed from reality a bit.
The pope just contradicted himself, he is ANTI birth control but also listed is "contributing to poverty". How do you think one of the ways you can INCREASE poverty is? More babies. I think the pope is a sinner.... So is the vatican trying to modernize now? :ugh: -Steve
if the Pope wants to help poverty then why isn't he more like Mother Theresa whom was the epitome of a christian believer catholic or not....
wrxboy, Because the Pope is the head of a religious business. Mother Theresa was working for their non-profit arm. He would like to make that arm a lot more profitable but the Marketing team says it's not a good idea. Now, I'm Christian. A sinner, for sure, but a Christian. I don't agree with all of those things and think Catholicism is a business but some of them have merit. When I pray with my kids I don't pray that they become good Christians. I pray that they act like Christ. Love your neighbors. Don't be self-righteous. Do good. Be wise. Help people and leave the judging to others. My favorite depiction of Christ is in the book entitled, "Lamb" by Christopher Moore. That book makes me laugh and it makes me well up big fat soul-shaking tears. I recommend it to all. Christian and non-Christian.
