Looking to buy some rims and wheels along with them, however im fairly novice to this are of a car. Would a width of 205 and a profile of 40 be any good for Tires? Better or worse then the RE92's that came with my car? Can someone explain this stuff to me please? Lol thanks a lot, i know the tires on my car are already "low profile" so i know that has to do with one of these numbers, some explanation and advice would be appreciated! Thanks! Edit: Also, if I purchase aftermarket rims should i keep the stock ones for winter? or just wash the aftermarket ones and keep them on year round? Like I said, new to most of this stuff.
first off the RE92s arent very good tires. so anything would be an imporovement. the profile of the tire is based on the width. so a 40 profile tire has a siodewall that is 40% of the width tall. kinda wierd to explain online. this page has alot of neat info on it http://www.subydude.com/store/wheelguide.php but its down right now.
First, we need to know what size rim you're getting as well. Are you sticking with the stock 16s or going to a 17 or 18? Second, what are you trying to do, move up to a wider tire for more grip or a narrower tire for winter? Keep in mind, any changes may affect the speedometer of your car, as it's calibrated off the stock diameter. Get the wrong size tire, and your speedo will be way off. Also, your ride height can be affected as well. Here in MN, going to a very low profile sidewall (40 or lower) can put you at more risk due to the large number of potholes and roadgaps here in the state. Less rubber means less cushion for those rims. If you're on the stock 16s and you want to upgrade, try a 225/50R16. You'll get wider tires, a lower profile and it's the same diameter as the stockers, so your speedo won't be affected.
If you can afford/store an additional set for winter I would do that. Also money permiting you could buy some dedicated "winter" tires and something a bit more sporty for the summer.
I am looking at some 17" rims, i was thinking about selling my stocks and keeping them on year round because in a year i will be moving, could be to a similar climate, like Michigan or possibly Pennsylvania. I dont think i can afford a second set of tires/rims so i may have to forgo the whole venture if its a necessity.
would something like 235/45 or 225/40 just really close numbers work? And if i clean my rims is it ok to leave em on in the winter?
i wouldn't worry so much about the rims getting dirty, as much as i would worry about the impending doom of not being able to steer or stop your car once a 1/4" of snow hits the ground.
For a WRX, on a 17x7.5 wheel, a 225/45/17 is common. Actually, that is what is found on the 2004 STi 17 X 7.5 BBS wheels w/ 225/45/17 tires. For an 18x7.5 wheel, 225/40/18 works fine. This is what I'm running. There are alot of other combinations to run. But those are pretty common. They offer a very close to stock circumference for speedometer accuracy.
^ I run the same setup as Jason...18x7.5 with 225/40/18 and they work well...235 is still ok...but it might start to stick out a bit...

Sorry dude, a 235 won't make the tire stick out. It cannot pass the bead on the rim, therefore the only thing that may make it "stick out" is the offset of the rim itself. Just so you don't cause the boy confusion....
I'm getting some Kumho ASX 235/40/17 this coming up 2nd paycheck....wait....scratch that.... some AVON Tech M550 A/S........... Wheels are next4 weeks. so in abouts...5weeks I'll have new tires and new wheels. 7weeks ish form now will I have bigger brakes and possibly suspension works.
NOOOO FUJI!!!! DON'T DO IT! Avon tech 550s are CRAP. an autoxer friend put some on her DAILY DRIVER and took them OFF about 3 weeks later. The ASX isn't bad, but, well.. their... slow.

205/40r17 I wouldn't buy them. 205 width for me is too small. (Or to narrow). Don't be stuck on price either. I would be more concern with what brand, tire design and what kind of performance you would want out of your tires. You wouldn't want to keep spending money on tires when you can spend that good hard earned money somewhere else.
1. Thats not the correct size tire for a subaru. it will throw your speedometer off by 4.4 MPH @ 60 MPH. This will also throw your MPG off, as you will be running higher RPMs at the same speed. Acceptable Subaru Tire sizes are the following: 205/55-16 215/50-16 215/55-16 205/50-17 215/45-17 225/45-17 235/40-17 245/40-17 All of these will leave your spedometer within 1mph of correct @ 60MPH. an acceptable margin of error. how wide you go will mainly depend on the rim that the tire is being mounted on. 2. it's impossible to gauge weather a tire is crap from the size. the BRAND AND MODEL of tire are more important than size, as good and bad tires come in the size your listing.
I went with the Eagle F1 GS-D3 is Goodyear's Max Performance Summer on my stock rims. They have an awsome tread pattern, hold the grip good, and are great on wet roads too. You seem strapped for cash, so my recomendation would prob be, either leave your car stock for a while, or upgrade your tires to good summer tires, and then you MUST buy winter tires. of which i do Blizzaks for winter. I dont spin my tires on solid ice if i dont want to. otherwise save for some 17" rims, and get summer tires, but dont skimp on the tires man, they make or break the car. and stock tires are TERRIBLE! keep your stock rims for winter and your all set. just a quick wheel swap every spring, fall. unlike me, where ive been on stock rims and i have to have my tires swapped from the rim every season change which costs me 60 bucks 2 times a year.
