Hi, i'm new to this site and looking to get into upgrading my 02 wrx and possibly getting into rally-x. It's been a stock daily driver for about 5 years (145k miles) and took it out a few weeks ago and lost power getting on the highway. No compression in cylinder 3 and low compression in cylinder 1 (60psi). I have the engine out and will be pulling it apart to see whats wrong this week. I'm looking at doing a hybrid build with a new oem ej257 block or finding a used ej257 block and having it rebuilt. I plan to continue using this as a daily driver and potentially some rally-x. Any suggestions on which is the better route, where to get parts (new or used), and what other mods to make while I have the engine out. So far I am planning on/thinking about: New clutch kit, possibly lightweight flywheel New uppipe, downpipe, headers? New stage 1 or 2 cams, valves, valve job New waterpump, oil pump I'm thinking about upgrading the turbo later unless it is a lot easier with the engine out. Any ideas would be helpful.
welcome aboard...I'd recommend talking to Nuke @ NF Performance, he's an awesome tuner and very knowledgeable
I have an 02 and went to a 2.5 hybrid setup last year. You can get everything that you need brand new from Morries for around $3,500. I got a 2010 ej257 with stock internals and all of the timing pulleys, belts, gaskets... Do yourself a favor, (if you're stuck on 257) find a rebuildable ej257, get some aftermarket pistons and accessories, and contact NF Performance on here. Don't completely rule out a rebuild on your ej20 though! You could get the old one built for less money overall, and NF has been doing 2.1 builds out of 2.0 blocks with quite a bit of success. You'll be fine with the TD04 turbo on the 257 because the new torque will be pleasing to the butt dyno(if you go that route)! I went with an 08 VF48, but could have easily stuck with the TD04 if i would have had one in good working order. Good luck with the build and keep us updated with your decisions! Welcome to MnSubaru!!
Welcome aboard and good luck with the build. Make sure to take lots of pictures and keep us posted on how things are going.
I pulled off the heads and had a burnt exhaust valve. There are also cracks between the valves, has anyone else seen this and reused the heads or are they junk?
