just bought a 257k miles, 5 speed 1999 forester for 2 grand. head gasket was changed, so it should last. the rear bearing's making noise. I heard it is hard to change that bearings since they need to be pressed. this is my first SUV, and I have been driving cars my whole life. is it normal to notice the brake response is dull? or is it my forester's brakes need to be changed? But I am surprisingly happy with the engine response. tons of torque and any speed!
That is the drum brakes in the rear, and more importantly the lack of Electronic brake force distribution. Like I said on the SF.org, the rear disc conversion can be several hundred dollars, and many claim there is no improvement (since there is no Electronic brake force distribution to take advantage of the more powerful rear brakes). Some nice front brake pads, and nice front rotors will give the brakes more bite, but they still aren't going to be stellar!
ahh, as long as I know it is normal, I'm happy. All I need is to adjust my driving style with the machine's dynamics.

A dull brake response could be due to air bubbles in your brake fluid lines. At the mileage it is at, it's likely the case.
thanks for the suggestion. I've gotta find a buddy to press on the brake to bleed out the fluid. I've already bought some pricey brake pads. I hope that would help. Anyhow, I'm used to the brake response now. I'm planning to go for a road trip this july 4th to Montana using the forester. Hope it will survive the 15 hour drive.
I suggest you get the wheel bearing done before the trip. You will be happy you did because it'll be a long drive there and back. I got mine done last fall and man it's so much nicer to be able to listen to your music again.
