    Oil Pressure Light Problem

I need some help, maybe. I have a 05 Sti, no mods at all. About 85,000 miles on it and driven carefully for all of it.

Tuesday morning my wife went out to start it and the oil light was on and it wouldnt stay running for more than a minute or two. We tried starting it 4 times total. Before that it was running just fine and it was maybe 400 miles past 3,000 for the oil change. I checked the oil level and it was just fine, a little over full. I have always changed the oil within 600 miles of 3,000, so its been taken care of well. Always Mobil 1 Synthetic. Even in the very cold weather it has started just fine.

So i had it towed to RS Motors where the great Biker Boy was going to take a look at it. So this morning he checked the oil pressure sensor to make sure it was in working order. It was fine, he started it up and the oil light was gone and it ran for 15-20 minutes just fine, or more I never got back to him about it.

Question is, anybody have any other ideas what it could be?

My problem is I am leaving for Navy bootcamp on Wednesday and its my wifes main mode of transportation so I want to try and figure it out before I leave. Also very short on money. I trust Biker Boys opinion 1000%, but a few ideas never hurt. And I need comfort before I leave.

Congrats and good luck in the Navy! What're you going in for?

Have your wife post up your address and maybe we can send you some mail while you're at Great Lakes.

The only thing I can think of oil related on the STI was a TSB on the oil pan pickup tube, but I can't remember how many model years were affected. If Matt said the car is ok to drive, I wouldn't worry too much. It could be a short somewhere causing the light. If you've got oil, and the pressure sensor is working then something electrical would be my guess.

Im going to be an Air Traffic Controller.

I trust Matt completely, and he said maybe there was some corosion and when he checked the oil pressure sensor it got cleaned it off. But that wouldnt explain why it wouldnt stay running. :ugh:

Mail would be cool, I hear thats a way to keep up the spirits down there.

Yeah I am kind of stumped on this one. I drove the car around for maybe a mile since I didnt want to be to far away from the shop. I will try it in the morning and see if anything happens. You mentioned your over full on the oil which I verified this morning before I started it. I checked it after I started it and it was spot on full. I see that that the last oil change was at Carlson Toyota, I wonder if they used a filter without oil drainback valve? I think an oil change would be in order as well as inspecting the oil for glitter.

Perhaps it was idling so low that it never made enough rpms to keep pressure above the threshold of the OPS?

My beater wagon idles as low as 300rpm sometimes and does not trigger the oil light.

Bikerboy did an oil change and found "glitter" or metal in the oil:emo:

Any ideas? Any one know of a cheap way to get it towed from Burnsville to Coon Rapids?
