This might be a stupid question, but bear with me. So today when i started the car and it made bunch of weird noises. But what really made me worried is when i let go of the clutch the car lurched forwarded a little and felt like it was in gear, but i know it was in neutral. The rpms went way down but the car did not die. After a few minutes i started driving the car and when i revved it a little a could hear a sound that sounded a little like diesel engine, you know that distinct sound? It sounded like the valves were chattering or something. When the car wormed up both things went away. So my question is: should i get more liquidy engine oil and switch to uncle scotties cocktail? usually 5w-30 is good for winter but as for this morning it was very cold and subys will roll forward a little bit when you let out the clutch in neutral. as for the other noises. its just cold. all or most cars do that. nothing to worry about
subarus make funny noises...im sure you have nothing to worry about. me on the other hand...i have a case of piston slap that makes me depressed everytime i fire her up on a cold morning =(
Umm.... you should switch to Uncle Scotty's regardless, but if your car is engaging gears while in neutral, you need to look at your transmission mechanics...
i dont think its engaging gear just when its really cold (like this morning) everything is a little thicker and the car tends to want to go forward a little. when you let go of the clutch in neutral. or is this just me?
yeah, it just rolled a little bit. I am sure its just thick oil. When i had my cougar, i was cheap enough to bring it to a chop shop to get tranny fluid changed and instead of tranny fluid they put diff lube in it and the next morning when i started the car and let go of the clutch the car jumped forwarded and hit a huge metal dumpster.
um he never said it engages.. he said it lurches forward a tiny bit.. well its normal... everything is almost solid.... mine does it... I put mine in the garage and its much better but still does it at times... get a block heater and plug it in over night... ask tangledupinpoo where he got his.. the dealer I think...
I might be moving to a town home soon that will have a garage so that should some what help. Is it dangerous to have a block heater plugged in when the car is in the garage?

There's no need for a block heater if the car is parked in a garage. My garage isn't very well insulated and temps never drop below 50* in there during the winter.
^^^truth. And I picked up the block heater from Zombie, but they can be had at the stealership. I picked mine up for the overnighters at the womans house(no garage space for me). Mine is always fine without it when garaged.
if you're worried about the nasty sounds just get a magnetic oil pan heater and set it on a timer so it comes on about 2 hours before you start your car. It'll make the oil nice and tosty and since its warm you won't get the scary sounds. You can also buy permenant pads that are glued to the pan and in conjunction with a block heater you'll be set (minus the two funny plugs hanging outta the hood).
mine is louder too, and it seems to sound like its running worse, but its actually better, if that makes since at all.
