Alright i'm coming up to my first OIL change. What is the best oil to use for a 06 STI i keep seeing Q Advanced Engine FUll Synthetic is this what i should get or What?? help
I prefer Amsoil as well. Sucks to have to order on-line but I used to redline my Prelude everyday and when I got my oil check at Blackstone-labs.com at 8600 mi they said all was good and I should push the oil further. I'm going for 10K mi on my 1st subie change. P.S. Make sure you get a good filter such as Mobile 1, Amsoil, hard driver, Hastings etc. Doesn't matter how good your oil is if your filter sucks.
alot of gas stations now carry amsoil. WRX1(russ) on this forum also sells amsoil. anyways, with that said, i use amsoil as well.
I use amsoil as well. My dad is a dealer if anyone is interested. I go the full length of the oil and have never had a problem. I use the amsoil filter which is now good for the length of the oil, no need for a mid year filter change. The filters are made in Bloomington, MN.
That's not the best of idea's, unless you plan to change the filter at 3k anyway. The filter will still get dirty even if the oil isn't so bad. The maintenence record on your car should show that you run synthetic too, because if you ever need warranty engine work, and your records show you did oil changes every 10k, their gonna deny you the warranty work.
^^It's nice that you bring that up. One specific member in here is planning to change his oil filter at 12,000 miles (the same time he's going to change his Amsoil engine oil). He's currently at 10,000 miles. LOL!
Well the good amsoil filters are good for 12,000 miles anyways, and the good oil is good for 25,000. The main thing about going extended intervals is that you also want to do the oil anyalasis to make sure that you are not running into any problems. I change my oil every 8-9000 miles and it comes out as clear as it went in. I sell my amsoil for cost plus sales tax, so if anyone is interested, lemme know. Russ
^^ That still isn't the best of idea's to follow the "directions" on the package. The filter may say it'll be good for 12k but, if your engine has lots of carbon deposits, it will restrict the filter, and dirty the oil faster than a clean engine would. I would go on the safe side, and change it every 3-5k...even if you are using synthetic oil.
Thats why they want you to send in oil analisys to them. If they are coming back ok, they it would be better to go on the extended intervals. Again, that is also how you drive the car. As much as I push my car all the time, I would stick with the lower intervals, but if it was a not boosted dailer driver that doesn't get beat on, I say go for it. Russ
The filters I used to run last 12,500. Also, the dealer would have no way of telling if you changed every 3k or not when doing your own unless there was significant wear of internals which would show a lack of oil changes. For all those who are not aware of Blackstone Labs, I highly recommend spending the $20. Like I said in my previous post, they did an analysis and let me know I can push my changes out further. If your engine is older they can help determine if you have wear on other items. I knew I was probably leaking coolant on my wife's Mailbu. I sent in a sample and sure enough it came back with coolant in it. That told me it was more likely than not the lower intake manifold gasket which isn't uncommon for 3.1 GM's to fail.
I've been so in the dark! I didn't know all these different places were carrying. I need to check the prices vs the preferred program via Amsoil directly. Does anyone know if it's priced decent?
at any store or gas station it will be the retail price if not a little more. If you sign up to be a dealer for 30 dollars I believe and you buy oil at dealer cost for two oil changes, you save your 30 back. If you want help signing up as a dealer let me know and I can get the info from my dad.
Already signed up as preferred customer which is very similar to dealers. It's only $20 though. I've got a stock pile of oil right now as I just ordered a few months ago. If it turns out to be better price than paying for shipping etc on my own I'll hit your dad up for my next order. Thanks.
^^^^ Why don't you just go through your dealer or your local jobber?? I get (and sell) all my oil for cost plus sales tax and there is never any shipping. There is no need to pay $10+ per case of oil to ship it. Russ
