You meant an open down pipe as in having no cat back? I would not recommend it. It will be extremely loud because there is no muffler, you will get a lot of emissions inside your cabin area where you sit (with the assumption that you have no cat in the uppipe), and it may begin to melt the underside of your car over time from the intense gas heat. The only benefit would be that you will have no back pressure so you will gain a few extra HP.

not to flame you.. but that would be very stupid.. see Fongs (kickin 81) commments.. very true...

I have a 40in x 3in internal resonatorm with a Magnaflow muffler and mine is loud... you take all that away and run straight pipes, you will drive for about 10 mins before your car is impounded...

again.. did I say this is a crazy idea

I could build you a 3 in exhaust from the DP back for about $280 - $300 maybe.. come by the store and see mine and listen see if you like it..

    no exhaust after dp.

I have an exhaust after my DP and no cats and my car smells like a gas station. I can't imagine what it would smell like with the exhaust coming out under the driver's seat!

i think (imo) that you would be OK running the exhuast striaghtoutta the DP for a day or so. i would nto want to run like that for an extended period of time. the turbo acts kind of like a muffler, it will make the exhuast quiter then it would be on an NA car w/ no catback. but beyond that its still gonna be hella loud. it would be cool to see what it sounds liek though. if you do it take some video or something (or drive through some tunnels or parking garages lol).

oh, and for the exhaust gettin in the cabin. this will only happen if you are in park or driving slowly. obviously if you are driving down the highway at 65 you arent going to get getting exhaust fumes in the cabin if they are coming out of the downpipe.

you could always make a piece that does from teh DP then turns 90deg so that is either goes strieght down or out to the side, so you dont melt your car lol

No DP at all for teh w1n!

I was really tempted to try it out when I installed my exhaust, but didn't want to wake the neighbors. I'll be changing my gaskets soon (leaky leaky) so maybe then......

i will try it f0 sh0 some time. but it might jsut be open headers NA and all.

on a similar note: Chux went for a long time running just headers or some variation of header/no header.

excuse me but I wasnt flaming him personally, I said in my opinion it woudl be stupid... not that he was stupid.. shane on the other hand was in a different league...

I WAS NOT flaming but answered him fairly professionally... considering soem of the comments most have made including you Justin my comment was very pleasant.. lets all get on the same playing field before passing judgement and sentence on people... or being so hypocritical..

and fact is if there is any vacuum present (ie - wind draft into cabin) you will get exhaust leaks into the cabin.. most the time you will not smell enough of the carbon monoxide to realise but over time you will get the seedy feelings and headaches... being that the dp ends in front of the passenger compartment this would be totally ILLEGAL on a street driven vehicle and again STUPID to do... in summer not an issue as you will drive with windows down and the fresh air coming into the vehicle will counter-act the problem, but in winter if you want to turn your vehicle into your personal coffin on wheels feel free....

now persoanlly I dont understand why people will want to draw so much undue attention to themselves then they are the ones who cry when they get ticketed etc... especially nowadays when tuner cars have such a hard time with the law anyways.. why aggrivate the situation..???

Now Justin does this satisfy the answers instead of flaming cause I would rather tell someone that they have a stupid idea then to tell them it is ok and have them die of exhaust poisoning... just my .02 cents worth

yes. good job. i'm just sick of newbies asking questions and people acting all nasioc like. you dont need to tell newbies that their ideas are just plain stupid. that doesnt teach them/us anything. plus that doesnt help attract new members. if you are going to answer the questions do it in a helpful way, so we all can learn something.

    you guys good?

    WTF?
Seriously... i've got no problem answering the "dumb" questions. i get them all the time on various other forums I'm on.

but when you type something that barely resembles actual human language.... that's when i have a problem.

i love it when people type correct words and explain their thoughts.
i can accept when people write Inter-web speak. it still gets the point across.... usually.
but when a post falls below these two examples and i've re-read it multiple times and still can barely understand it, that's when they get the english mother ****er.

My comments had nothing to do with him being a n00b. just his poor means of conveying a point.

My foot it was! The rusting out rear quarter panels, the rear rubber donut suspension mounts, the Ford high-failure rate fuel pump (loves summers and ethanol), and my personal favorite, the clutch that came from an Escort.

If it wasn't for the engine, I would have shot my SHO a long time ago.

Yeah, that part is true. :?

But going back on topic, I'd be worried about carbon monoxide poisoning at anything other than highway speeds if one ran wide open after the DP.

So what is the point to going wide-open? Lots of noise? Possible HP gains? No torque?

the possible gains would probabyl beslightly more HP, fast spool from less back pressure, awsome sounding non existant exhuast, wieght reduction.

downsides = maybe too loud, illegal, CO levels, melting

Well I for one wonder what exactly you are try to achieve.....

I fairly certain I remeber a thread on nasioc about the fastest car on a stock turbo, (atleast at the time) was running a cutout for the ehaust, only bypassing the exhaust on track, pretty sure they even linked you to a place to buy one, if you really had to have the power at certain times, this may be the road you should choose.

Note to self to try running an open DP sometime, atleast for a minute....

    "qouted from another POst"

Every motor vehicle shall at all times be equipped with a muffler in good working order which blends the exhaust noise into the overall vehicle noise and is in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise, and no person shall use a muffler cutout, bypass, or similar device upon a motor vehicle on a street or highway. The exhaust system shall not emit or produce a sharp popping or crackling sound . Every motor vehicle shall at all times be equipped with such parts and equipment so arranged and kept in such state of repair as to prevent carbon monoxide gas from entering the interior of the vehicle.

    please note this last part....

i believe that statement is situational. so OBVIOUSLY if you are sitting in your car and your not moving you will be getting a ton of carbon monoxide, but i have a really hard time believeing that when going at high speeds that any gas will get in your car. the air if flow so fast under there that i believe the only way gas would get in your car(at harmful levels) is if you had a crack/hole in your underbody that had a passage way into the cabin.

so...yes this is not a good idea because yes you will be sitting in your car stopped, aka sitting in traffic. but if you were to never be stopped, then go ahead and do it, aka a strictly race car

Regarding the entry of CO into the cabin while moving: Pure speculation on both sides, since CO is colorless and odorless, unless you have some metering device you can't say for certain one way or the other.

I was at Indy three years ago when five Canucks were found dead the day after the F1 race. Their trailer had a broken exhaust on the generator and they died on CO poisoning before qualifying.
